My husband is a teacher, and we want to go for a week at lower rates. It seems like August is going to be our only option. Is it super crowded? I am thinking Mid August will be a must.

We've always liked mid-August - it is horribly hot and humid, but the crowds are not like July or first week of August. Seems more managable - also, it is right before free dining when it gets busier now. Especially in summer we break early(by noon), go for resort R & R, then head back early evening to a park. Makes the vacation far more relaxing and even feel longer!

Have a great trip! :goodvibes

In 2006 we did the last 2 week of August and it was hot but I dont remember huge crowds. Last summer we went in July and itwas hot but very crowded.

I was there the third week of August last summer, just prior to free dining. It was very very hot, humid and pretty crowded. Many of the rides had long (1 hour +) waits and most fast passes were already gone by the time we made it to the parks. (we like to go to the parks in the early afternoon/late morning and stay until park close).
I would however go in August again, we ended up spending more time at the water parks then in the parks.

I have taken multiple trips to Disney in August (third and fourth weeks). It is hot and humid but not crowded. I believe Floridas kids go back to school in August. I suggest you go to the parks in the morning, head to the resort pool midday and afternoon when the sun is up high and hot, return to the parks in the evening and enjoy the more comfortable air.

Have fun!!

It is crowded but the crowds start to drop in mid Aug cause all the Fl kids go back to school.

Two teachers here, going down from Aug 13-19th.

This is my first time in a zillion years. But what I suggest is investing in either Tour Guide Mike or TouringPlans.com for advice on how to avoid the crowds. Either is well worth the money.

We've been in August - check the WDW site to see when the hours for the parks change - that's a pretty good indication of when the crowds go down a little bit.

As long as you plan to get to the parks very early, and/or stay very late, you'll be able to do pretty much everything you want. I second the idea of going back to the resort early afternoon, for swimming and naps!

OUr plan is to go back around noon until 5 each day. We have two younger kids, so it works out for us. Thank you for all of the great info.

My family has travel to WDW every early August (at least we have for the last 7 years). Crowds are really manageable. I prefer to go early August because you can still enjoy the late night park hours and take advantage of value season rates. If you wait to mid/late August the parks close pretty early. Most times even before dark. Last year our last day fell on the park hour changes. I really hated that. Every park was closed by 7 pm. The only park that was open was a water park.

And like a previous poster mentioned, I went to the early entry park every morning, returned to my room early afternoon. Most times we either napped or took a swim. We would return to the late exit park that evening have dinner and watch the crowds fade away. I love that late exit. If you can stomach it, there is not a ride you can’t ride if you stay late. Lines are nearly zero after 10:30 – 11:00 pm.

We have always gone in August and I have always felt that the crowds are manageable. However, the MK always gets super busy on week-ends. Have a great time.

We've been in August last year (right at the end) and found the crowds MUCH more manageable than in June (we just returned from another trip a few days ago). I think it's because most of the schools on the western side of the US are returning back to school. I'm a teacher too, and it's difficult to plan vacations when the kids are out too...everything is so crowded!

We have gone at the end of AUG for the past couple of years. This year we will be going 8/27 through 9/6 All the parks do not close at 7:00 PM!!! ...

MK is open until 10:00 PM ... sometimes 12:00 AM
EPCOT is open until 9:00 (WS) and 7:00 (FW) for ALL of Aug.
DHS is open until 8:00 (this does drop from 10:00 from the beginning of Aug.)
AK is open until 5:00 (drops from 8:00 from the beginning of Aug.)

With the crowds being considerably LESS at the end of August the closing times aren't an issue! This works for us!! We prefer LESS CROWDS to later close times. Plus they still offer extra magic hours if you need that "late close time"!! We DO NOT waste time going back to the resort mid-day ... I know MANY people do it, we just don't find it necessary and find it to be a waste of "Disney minutes"!!! :rotfl:

We were at WDW once at the end of July, and it was super-crowded. Someone told me that many people from Brazil are there during the summer, because 'our' summer is 'their' winter. I've never been there during the month of August. I would think the crowds might not be quite as large in August, only because August & September are hurricaine season.....but I cannot say for sure.
