Critical Situation with my Cat -- (UPDATE 2/13 on Pg 2)

So sorry to hear about your kitty. Please let us know how things go Thursday. Sending a hug for you and pixie dust for Kitty.

I'm sorry. :( Good luck getting to the tests -- I also think you're doing the right thing.

Only thing I can suggest about the travel is can someone else drive and allow you to hold your baby on your lap, even if (s)he's in the carrier? Also put a towel with your scent on it in the carrier, that will help calm Baby. And, if you play soothing music, that could also help.

Good luck!!

By any chance are you coming to the VCA - Veterinary Referral Associates here in Gaithersburg, MD?

If so, they are wonderful. Every time I've gone I've met people from Pennsylvania, Virginia and D.C. and even further away!

We adopted two 7 year-old cats last September from someone with health problems and one of the cats was diagnosed this winter with a severe heart murmur. Our vet threw us into a panic stating that she thought "Moxie" would die within a year or so. She referred us to the clinic mentioned above and I'm so glad we went and had the tests done. Dr. Cain at VCA feels that Moxie's heart disease is at least potentially controllable with medication and although it's hard to get that pill down her every day I feel it's worth it. Even if we only add a few years to her life it's worthwhile.

Luckily we live only 25 minutes away from this regional center so Moxie doesn't mind the ride too much. She's such a gentle cat (but big cat!) we've managed to train her to ride in a big blanket in my arms. She cries bitterly in the carrier because she's used to riding tandem with her companion Snickers. I do put her in the carrier when I go alone.

It's so difficult making these decisions isn't it!

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Kathy

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone for your good thoughts and advice! I just loaded the car. Drinks and Snacks for the trip (won't want to stop anywhere with him). I also had to pack some food and water for Baby, plus dishes, and cat litter AND I almost forgot a scoop and baggies! LOL. Who would have thought it would take all of this to make a Kittie trip for the afternoon. I am leaving around 11:00am or so -- my appointment is at 1:00pm ---- send good vibes my way around 1:00! I will try to get on and update the thread when I return late afternoon/early evening!
Thanks again!
Jody

:D

I'll keep you in my thoughts today, Jody! Let us know how it goes.

My prayers are with you. Let us know what you find out. We lost our cat recently and it is very traumatic.

UPDATE -

First off -- a Great big THANKYOU for all of your advice and good thoughts. The trip went well. Baby has a heart arithmia that he will take a pill a day to regulate. He also has an enlarged heart - which they feel was due to an infection at some point in his life that went to his heart. Without treatment it would continue to swell -- and eventually cause his lungs to fill with fluid and cause heart failure. Thankfully -- this also is treatable with medication. He will also receive 1/2 of a baby aspirin every three days to keep his blood thin so his heart doesn't have to work quite as hard. He will be on meds the rest of his life --- but should have a pretty normal life otherwise.
:)

OH Jody, I am so happy for you! That is wonderful news! I was thinking about you guys today and am glad that medicine will help out!!!! YIPEEEE!!!!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I'm glad to hear things worked out so well. My older cat had a similar situation and had to be on meds the rest of her life too. It has to be a big relief for you. Thanks for the update!

Wonderful news!! I'm so glad your Baby is okay!! I love my babies so much I just can't imagine life without them.

Just saw this thread for the first time today and I'm so glad to hear good results! How did Baby tolerate the ride in the car there and back? I know my kitties freak out going for a 5 min. car ride to the vet's office.

Isn't it a great feeling of relief when you think something is going to turn out badly, and it turns out much better than you originally thought???

So glad your kitty is OK. I don't have cats, I am a "dog person", but I fully understand how much we animal people LOVE our pets, no matter what the species!!!

:D I'm so happy to hear the good news! Give your baby a big {{{hug}}} from me and Chester (my kitty)! :D

yay for Baby! It is so good to hear some good kitty news! :D Hope Baby continuous to improve and lead a healthy life.:D

Jody, so glad to hear the good news!! I am so glad to hear that your baby will have a good life with the pills :)

Jody! That is great news for your baby! (((HUGS))) for you and baby!
