Please don´t laugh but I´m seriously in a crisis over my "do" or lack of one to be more explicit.
I´ve had long hair since I was a little girl (I´m 32 now). It´s always very long, always at least down to the middle of my back or to my waist. I´ve dyed it from time to time but usually I just have my natural hair color, which is a chestnut brown (with a tint of red). It´s thick, healthy and shiny and I get lots of compliments on it. I just really want a change but don´t know what kind of cut I would like. It´s kind of like my hair has become my trademark (since people talk about it a lot, and I often am described at work or at my choir as the one with the long beautiful hair).
Has anyone taken the plunge and done something completely different? Did you love it? Regret it?
I´m 40 lbs. overweight and I have no clue whether my long hair makes me look fatter or thinner?

I am a natural redhead and once had long (middle of back), wavy, beautiful, thick hair pre-baby back in 2002. Once my DD was born I had it cut to my ears in a cute bob because she kept pulling on it and I was getting tired of wearing it in a ponytail. I liked it for about a week then I had regret and remorse for the next 8 years!!

It has never fully grown back to what it was. It is now down to my chest, but it has taken me almost 8 years to get there! I look at it everyday and wish I had never cut it. Once it started growing back, my waves were gone and they were replaced with kinky curls underneath and straight hair on top!

Good luck with what you decide, but this was my experience.

I definitely would not just suddenly cut it very short. First, I would get recommendations for a good hair stylist and start with a cut so the hair is a little below shoulder length. It would still have the appearance of long hair, without being so long (and a lot less trouble!). The stylist should be able to make suggestions on whether your would look good with a few longer or shorter layers to go with the new hair length to suit the shape of your face. Good luck!

I would have a consultation with a really great stylist and let them give you some suggestions as to what would look good with your face shape.

Mine was down to my shoulders for years...3 months ago I had it cut SHORT! I thought it was a big mistake, but actually liked it. Now, its growing back, and looks like Crap!:sad2: I also have to wash it 2-3 times a week which makes it dry! I need to Dye it, and am hoping it will look better, if not, I may have it cut SHORT again!:confused3

Thanks everyone! I feel for those who regret! Definitely going to make an appointment with my stylist. I have layers at the moment and think that maybe I should just have it cut to shoulder length and dyed. Maybe even try out some soft/long bangs again. We´ll see what she says.

If you replaced red hair with blonde, this would be my story. I regret cutting my long, thick hair because it has never been the same (and I cut it 13 years ago).

I've been letting my hair grow lately, and it's past midback. I'm thinking about going short at some point. I'm not sure how much hair length changes whether you look heavier or not. Good luck with your weight loss efforts. I'm down 30, and trying to lose my last few.

Wow, so many of you sound like me! Long straight blonde hair, no bangs, down to my waist... Thinking about a cut but not sure what to try. Lost 25 pounds and want to lose another 25 and wondering how the long hair affects the perception of your weight. I know I hide behind mine in the sense that it literally covers part of my body and also that I figure I'm known as the gal with really long hair not " that chubby lady over there!". I'm wanting to donate to locks of love and ready for it to be a bit shorter but a little scared. I think I'll cut it to about 5 inches below chin length and move my part further to the side right now it's just a bit to the left of center. Eager to hear how this works out for everyone!

You know what.. I love it. Its all different lengths. I didnt let her go to crazy. Its to my bra strap. I dont feel like I am walking with my head bent back wards anymore. And saving so much on hair products.

All she kept saying, was its hair it will grow back. :scared1:

Mine's about the longest it's ever been. It's been mostly shoulder to midback.

Mine was down past bra strap very very curly got to be a pain to take care of cut it very very short last spring an I love it I will never have long hair again.

This.

I'm the complete opposite. I had long, thick, curly hair down to my waist. I had it all cut to right at the shoulder on a spur of the moment decision!! I looked at it and was unsure, and then when we went to disney I looked at the pictures and it was amazing how great my hair looked!! My hair has grown way down past the shoulders again and I cannot wait to get to the hairdresser next week to chop it off!! If you have a good hair stylist, go with the flow!

TBH, I've never seen anyone with super long hair that looked good with it (and I've had longer than shoulder length most of my life). To find good stylists, I find people who's haircut I love. I recently jumped ship from my usual $60 stylist, $180 colorist, because my gf got a great cut and highlight from another salon, for less money.

Yep, I have been searching for a place that does not charge an arm and a leg for a basic style and color. Some of these places are jokes are me.
Tony Cao in TX has ruined me. If I am going to pay $$$ then you better do a $$$ job.

So currently seeing someone who is OK. Can do a good style and I know her prices for color are not overinflated.

I just had my haircut to a simple bob to the shoulder with a face framing. She thought I was going to do the "swing bob" but I just can't bring myself to do it. It requires to many appts. to keep up that look.

Now my hair grows fast so cutting it is never a problem. If I want to grow it out, it grows. Which is one of the reasons why I don't want the swing bob. That means a trim every 3-4 weeks. That is just too much for me.
