You seem to be under the impression that there has to be shootouts and crackheads wandering the streets for there to be a problem. In reality all it takes is one high profile crime against tourists to raise an alarm and 2 or more to cause a panic. That's exactly what happened with the Germans and it led to a major increase in police presence at Florida tourist areas that continues to this day.
One person getting shot to death in a major city on any given night barely even rates the evening news. If that one person happens to be a foreign tourist it makes national headlines back home and even the impression of a crime wave is enough to send our local officials who depend on tourist dollars into crisis mode.
So in one way you're right. You could get blown away tomorrow and nobody would care because as Americans we're used to it.
