I just upgraded my regular cricut to the Cricut Expression and when I did I got the Mickey Font cartridge. Ok I must be crazy because I can't figure out how to piece the Mickey face together. How do I get each piece to cut seperately? When I select the mickey head it just cuts the whole thing at once and I don't get the cut the individual pieces/colors. What am I doing wrong? I didn't think it was supposed to be this hard!

To get the individual pieces, you need to the special function keys. Usually, you end up having to cut the base (no function key selected), then for each color you will have to use a combo of function keys and shift keys. I don't have the instructions in front of me, but if you look at the booklet, you can see the different parts in each of the different squares. Each square represents what happens if you use each of the special function keys. If the image is in the upper right, you will need to use the shift key, as well as the special function key that corresponds to the box.

Hi, the Mickey Font cartridge does not cut each piece as a different color (the Mickey & Friends cartridge will), it just cuts out the head of the different character. So, you are not doing anything wrong! HTH!

No, the Mickey font cart DOES cut different colors for the character heads. On page 126 of the book, you can see that the first thing you would do is cut the base of the head in black by not using any creative feature keys, just select the character you want (like Mickey). Then you will select the "charm" creative feature key, and use the flesh color to cut his face, then you will select the "silhouette" creative feature key, using white paper to cut his eyes, then you will use the "end caps" creative feature key, using a pink paper to cut his tongue. If you want a black out of Mickey's head, then you would use the "Mickey tag" creative feature key, and if you want a shadow, then you would use the "shadow" creative feature key. After selecting which ever creative feature key you are using at the time, then you would select the character on the key pad (in this case, the Mickey head) on the bottom row of the key pad. If you look on page 17 of your manual, it shows how to cut and assemble the layered character pieces, and it really helps. Once you learn how it all works, it gets a lot easier. HTH

I just got my expression and is there any really thorough site for that really explains how to use the different features of the machine or each cartridge. I know I can eventually figure it out, but it seems really confusing at this moment. Also, it seems like I am tearing up the paper trying to switch between the colors in the different layers. Can you help me?

kkbeaton2-Thanks! I did not know I could cut different color heads with the Mickey Font cartridge! Guess it pays to read the instructions in full! :rolleyes1 Thanks very much, will try this out next time I am working on a Disney page! OP sorry if I confused the matter!

What do you mean when you say you are tearing up the paper trying to switch the colors? Are you working with a brand new mat? Or is your paper very thin? Also, have you ever owned a Cricut at all before owning your expression? I'm not sure how much experience you have with the Cricut in general, so I need to know where to begin to be able to try to help you. For example, if you have already owned a Cricut before, you would probably already know some of the tips and techniques, and would have already tried some things that I might suggest. As far as the different features for each cartridge go, some are much harder to figure out then others. The Disney ones are all layered paper piecing ones, so they involve more steps then many others. But once you understand the basic concept, all of the paper piecing ones work the same.
