I have read somewhere that you can receive airline credits if you have purchased a ticked at a certain price, then it drops. I see this with SWA. Do other airlines do this? Specifically Air Tran?? thanks
Not sure about Airtran but nowadays most airlines charge you their normal change fee in the process of rebooking you at the lower fare. So you might not get anything back and might even have to pay more if you try.
Better to wait for a fare war instead of buying at their everyday low price.
Five years ago most airlines would give you vouchers for the fare difference when you asked, provided that no other changes such as flight or time were made. Not any more, generally.

I did a few minutes of searching on FlyerTalk and it seems that Air Tran's policy is to NOT give credits/vouchers if the fare drops. But that at least one passenger was able to get a credit via creative talking with a reservation agent.
The credit/voucher policy is different from airline to airline. SWA and UA are very good about it. I have $90 of UA vouchers waiting to be applied to my next airline ticket. And no change fee was ever applied when I requested the vouchers. Another popular airline to MCO, Delta is like AirTran. Their official policy is to charge a service/change fee when a ticket is refared--as seashoreCM posted. Athough a few folks have reported getting lucky in not being charged the change fee.
