Yes he just has to add you as an additional guest and advise the front desk you'll be checking in.

How is the OP an "additional" if they are the only one using the room? Is there an Age restriction at Disney resorts that is applicable.
I did not know I could "gift" a resort room... in fact a while back I was told by them I could Not! ??
I guess I was misinformed..

We booked for and paid for my in-laws to stay at WL two years ago. We were also staying there at the same time, but they were on a completely separate reservation. When I called and explained what I wanted to do, the phone CM understood. Their bands were linked to our credit card as well, they got the final bill under the door but I forbid them to look at it
Maybe things have changed since then, I'm not sure. I would call and ask questions.

It was a trip for beating cancer for my MIL. For what it's worth, I will never take an extended family trip again

Are you asking about Disney Resorts specifically, or other hotels in general? I think the answer is probably same regardless, but there may be individual hotels with different rules. As long as you are 18 yrs old you should be fine to stay in a hotel room paid for by someone else even if that person is not occupying the room. If you are under age 18, there are often rules about minors so you might need to ask the hotel. WDW technically requires an adult for every room with an expectation that adult will also be sleeping in the room.

Some (most) hotels will require a credit card to be on record, and may put a "hold" against a debit card. To my knowledge, WDW does not.

Group trips of students fall under different rules.
