Credit Card Stolen after Booking

Just got off the phone with Discover and they are taking off all the charges. They did say if it had been Visa/Mastercard we would not got everything taken off. They said other cards have a deductable? Is that true? Thanks so much for the info Tiger! All the charges were being made in Cali. It was probably Hook using the card. My DD7 was Wendy at the Halloween party at DLR last Oct. and he was not nice to her. Thanks for the kind words everyone!

That is just not true. The deductible exists only if you know that your card was stolen and failed to report it. I have never known anyone to have to pay that so Discover is engaging is some shameless self promotion here. In fact, when DS#1 had his credit card number stolen, he wasn't even aware of it. He had used it for the first time in a year to buy student malpractice insurance and it was stolen after that transaction. The fraud department noticed it and contacted him. It was easily resolved, mostly over the phone and by signing an affidavit stating that he didn't make those purchases.

Nope. My experience with Discover back in the old days is that they lie lie lie, and this comment they made don't help me to think that anything has changed!

Cafeen has it very very right...

And I know that I would far prefer to send my CC info through a trusted website rather than give it out to any CS rep anywhere. CS reps are generally just putting that CC info into a cgi form that's being

sent over the internet anyway, AND they have the opportunity to jot down the number while typing...

I just want to validate this.

While it us plausible that the CSR stole it...the number could have been obtained anywhere.

Not that I ever have....I never will order from any infomercial type situation or a shopping channel. I worked as a call center agent from my house and fielded those phone calls. I even took phone calls for food delivery. While I was honest and and the company was vigilant about it's integrity---the opportunity is there for fraud. I just don't want anything bad enough where I am providing sensitive data to someone that has no direct oversight.

In a cubicle setting... It would be more difficult, but it could be done.

Again--that doesn't mean this happened to the OP in that manner, but chances increase for dealing with a person you cannot see.

As for the company I worked for...they did have a worker terminated and I presumed arrested. Fraud charges were able to be traced to her. They shared with us as a warning that we could be caught.

First off, this kind of thing stinks (to put it midly) and I do feel for you that it happened.

Secondly, most stolen numbers are not used immediately (with most being either skimmed a la the OKW/SSR person or through web-based virii that send keylogging info to another network). Even though you haven't used the card in months, does not mean the last time you used it is the root. It very well could be, but it's actually not the most likely. (The reasons for this are numerous, from throwing victims and investigators off the track to simple logistics). Any time you use any sort of card, online, over the phone, even in person, there's that chance. It's best to keep vigilant no matter if you're using the card actively or not.

And yes, there have been many cases where entire shipments of cards were already compromised before they got to the intended receiver.

Now, I'm not saying what the OP is saying is wrong (the only way I'd do that is if I had the proof, which, I obviously don't), just enlightening on other possibilities and informing others of possible dangers :).

My mom is actually dealing with the person who stole her cc# and didnt even get to use it yet, but it was in her possession, in court. Last week my mom gave a deposition that she did indeed order a fruit basket from this particular fruit company on this date. MONTHS LATER, the thief tried to use the cc#s and was caught. My mom's # was in her possesion but had not been used YET. Others that were there testifying with her were not so lucky. Hers was a MC.

I got a phone call a couple of years ago, about my MC. Someone in TX had ordered flowers from 1-800 Flowers, because I had an account and I resisded in PA, 1-800-Flowers alerted the fraud dept and would not let the charges go through. The person also tried to open a memebership to Ancestry.com. MC was wonderful about the charges, and getting me a new card. The lady at 1-800 Flowers told me that the thieves will sit on #s for awhile and then send through a small charge to see if this #s are good then they will go to town ordering the bigger ticket items.

My Visa card was compromised after I used it in New York City last April. Over $7,500 in purchases were charged in pretty fast succession ...Visa called me to enquire if it was me as I had called to give the heads up that I would be travelling. Of course it wasn't..the card was shut down and I was not responsible for 1 cent-thank goodness!!!!!

Of course, in the end, we all pay with increased fees and bank charges sadly.

Not true..neither my MC or Visa have a deductible. It depends on each cards contract.

Just got off the phone with Discover and they are taking off all the charges. They did say if it had been Visa/Mastercard we would not got everything taken off. They said other cards have a deductable? Is that true?

Just an update to this post. I just recieved an alert from Amex that a fraudulent charge had been attempted on my card. I don't know how they caught it. but is was some attempted charge over the internet. This card is a brand new one I got about 2 weeks ago and the only time I used it was when I booked the Candlelight Processional last week and had to leave a credit card number. Does anyone know who or if I should let Disney know? It certainly seems this card was compromised thru Disney.
Thanks, Murphy

I'm not sure who you should speak with, but I guarantee someone will come here to tell you that it is not Disney's fault and yada, yada, yada! While I know that it could be a coincidence, some how I am starting to think that it is not:rolleyes1.

There was a story a few months ago, maybe early to mid July, about a CM at WDW, using guests credit card numbers. This CM was caught and dealt with. I'm pretty sure it happens more than we think...so it always pays to check your credit card statements.

Strange that this thread is here! About a month ago, I had put our deposit on my bank card for our Dec trip. A few days later I was taking dd to her college and had used my bank card for some fees that needed to be paid. While I was there the bank called my and said there was a few transactions on internet web sites for the same amount of 9.91. I knew that I didn't make them so my card was cancelled and lucky for me there was a BOA right in the town I was at so I got it taken care of quickly. I assumed at the time that it was probably the college where my number was used, now I am wondering since I used it a few days before over the phone with Disney.

I hate to think it was there my card number was given out. But, it is a lesson learned and I probably won't use my debit card again. It freaked me out because I needed that cash for dd! The bank did tell me that is how it works, several smaller charges to make sure the card works and then they hit you for a big charge.
