Creating your own flight itinerary

Next month I need to travel to Elmira, NY for business. When I search Delta (my airline of choice, this is fixed), I can leave at 6AM, go to Atlanta, 3 hour layover, go to Detroit, 90 minute layover, then Elmira.

BUT, if I search individually, I can leave at 7:30AM to Detroit, 4:30 layover, then fly to Elmira. The combined ticket price is even $30 less.

If I filter the Delta search to just one stop through Detroit, I don't get in until 11p... not preferred.

I tried calling Delta to do this "custom" itinerary and got the "we're busy, unless you're flying in the next 72 hours, hang up".

I'd prefer to have this all under a single ticket and not have to mess with checking in twice, having two receipts, etc. Anyone know magic tricks to get the two flights onto one itinerary?

Yes, you have to book it as Multi City Home city-DTW, then DTW-ELM. The issue is that Delta won't book anything with a greater than 4 hour layover.

Thanks! Multi City was the answer. I've looked at Multi-City before, but not on the same day.
