I'd like to make a video of this year's trip. I'll start by saying I have zero knowledge, but am willing to learn and look at the whole process as an experience.

I want to be able to take videos and pictures on vacation, come home and edit the content, set it to music and burn a dvd.

I use PC's at home. I have an IPHONE 6 plus. Zero editing software. I am willing to purchase hardware and software to accomplish what I want to do. I would prefer to take the video with my phone so I don't have to carry around another piece of equipment, but I would if I had to.

Any thoughts, help....thanks!

For just basic stuff like that, Windows Movie Maker is free and will do exactly what you want - if you're on a Mac, you can use the included iMovie software to the same effect. The Windows 7/8/8.1 version will install just fine on Windows 10.

You can spend lots on a video device, but I will suggest you get something dedicated if cheap - if only because your iPhone won't last all day with its battery, and a camcorder will have a dedicated battery and you can carry spares.

If your video is more than a few minutes of highlights... be prepared for some pain if you have a slow computer... especially if your vids are Full HD.

On Movie Maker, mostly just a bunch of waiting. It transcodes videos when they're imported, and then again when exported, and that takes a long time, but in between it uses a low-res copy so your computer can edit it quickly - even a 5-7 year old computer can edit an hour long video without much of an issue.

ok so if I get something to shoot the video other than the IPHONE than what does everyone recommend?

How much are you willing to carry? How important is quality? And what is your budget?

Agreed....
  • I love my Sony 3D camcorder
  • thinking about that new 4K camcorder for less than 1k
  • I love Canon's 24Mbps camcorders
  • look for something with forward facing microphones for best audio.

I really don't want to carry anything which is why I wanted to use my IPHONE 6 plus, but if I have to carry something it has to be tiny. I'd be willing to spend up to $1,000 on the new hardware. As far as quality, I don't want it to be fuzy or jumpy but I'm making it and I'm not a professional in any way so it's not going to be perfect. Can I just add that I really appreciate all of your remarks. It is very helpful and it's a project that I really want to do.

I downloaded an app called "GooglePhotos" on my iphone. I can make video's that include photos and video clips taken with the phone. (I have also uploaded photo's to facebook from my regular camera and then saved the photo's on my phone as well). The app kinda makes the videos itself, but you can go back and edit things, and shorten video clips if you like and such. It will even make collages, storybooks, and video's on it's own, that you can choose to save if you like. The music you can alter as well and it has filters.

I happened to see a Panasonic fs 40 at Costco the other day. What drew my attention was the size. The price was 299.99. It has a 30x zoom and electronic view finder. That means you put it to your eye and can see what you are taking. It gets harder when you use the LCD screen due to the sunlight hits it directly

Canon also makes some nice small ones.

Something in those categories would be nice for a starter.
