What size crate should we get for my mom's new miniature dachund we are picking up tomorrow? We are going shopping tonight for the sweet little baby. We didn't crate train our dog properly and I want to make sure my mom does with the new puppy.

Also, any suggestions on some goodies we should pick up?

It should be only big enough for the puppy to stand and turn around. He'll need another crate in a few months. They make some nice mats for the crates, the puppy really doesn't need much and there are several choices. An old blanket will work also but should be pretty small for a puppy.

You can also just partition off a larger crate which is what we did since we could not have afforded then to buy two crates. Also, I like the wire crates as opposed to the plastic ones since the dog can see out and it's nice and airy. The plastic ones can get so dirty looking and smelly. With the wire ones, we just pop out the plastic pan on the bottom and put it in the tub to clean. You may want to just use a blanket that smells like your mom to help him transition and feel secure. My younger lab sleeps with one of my old bed pillows. I tried to give her a nice new one and she wouldn't sleep on it!

You can look into a bigger crate w/ a moveable wall to make it smaller. They do cost more- but in the end it will save you because you won't be buying a new one every 6 weeks. The crate should have no more room than to turn around in. I'd suggest getting a book on crate trainning to use as a tool so you know you are doing the "right" thing.

We got one that would be large enough for Dublin when she is full grown and put a board in it to partition it off, we drilled a couple holes in the board and used zip ties to anchor it to the crate. We can move it back as she grows. Her space now isn't very big but she is only about 11" long and about 5 1/2 pounds.
