Crashing At A Friend's Resort?

My wife and I are trying to save a bit of money this trip and I have a question on 'guesting' at a friend's resort.

So we're staying at an All Star Resort for a week and our friend is staying at a DVC resort in a 1 bedroom for 2 weeks at the same time by himself.

What I was originally planning to do was to check out of our resort on the last day of our trip, spend the day at a park, then stay the night at a dirt cheap Orlando hotel before driving home the following morning. I don't see the point in spending the extra cash for a Disney room the last night since we won't be using any of the perks the following day; just need a place to sleep.

But then I had the idea of asking our friend in the DVC room if we could crash our final night on his pull out sofa bed. We'd pay him or take him to breakfast or something of course.

His room has an occupancy of 4 and he'll be by himself. If he were to agree to that, are there any rules we'd be breaking? Would he need to go to his resort's guest services and add us as guests for 1 night to allow our bands to get in the parking lot and unlock the door? Has anyone ever done that and have some insight?

Thanks!

He'll need to add you for the one night. Unsure how to do that for DVC but it should only be a small price for the 3rd person. Again unsure how to do this at DVC since it may be points but not 100% sure.

Yes you would need to be added to have access to the resort parking lot and room. But this should not be a problem. If he is staying on points there is no extra charge.

No extra adult fee charge for DVC villas booked on points. Your friend is well under the DVC occupancy rules for a 1 bedroom. Yes, he can add you and your wife to his villa.

Well, since there isnt an extra fee this is the way to go.

Yes, they need to be added to the reservation but there is no nightly extra adults fee, or any extra cost, at DVC resorts.

This is good too know. I don't own DVC just my friends do and they have added people before just didn't know if they paid a fee or not.

Thanks for the responses!

Soooooo, what if I was wrong about the DVC part and he just had a 1 bedroom at a deluxe resort? I'm finding out he's not DVC. :headache:

There would be a fee attached to adding 2 people to his room for a night?

There will only be a fee for the 3rd person since all rates are for double occupancy. At a deluxe it is currently 25 a night.

He may not be a DVC member however he may be staying in a DVC room as part of an exchange through RCI or on a cash reservation direct through Disney. In any event, there should not be any fee to add on the extra adults. AFAIK, Disney does not charge for extra adults in the Deluxe Villas AKA DVC rooms.

If you are stayig in a regular resort room then there is a fee for the third adult. If you are staying at a villa resort then there isn't a fee for extra adults. It doesn't make a difference if your friend is a DVC member or not.

Is he in a 1-bedroom villa at a DVC resort or a 1-bedroom suite at a deluxe? If you happen to know specifically where he is staying, we could give you a definitive answer. If he is in a 1-bedroom suite at a deluxe resort, the extra adult fee (for the 3rd adult) for one night will be $25+tax (or $35+tax in 2018), which is still probably cheaper than staying at another hotel!

I knew there was no fee for over two adults if you exchanged or were on a points reservation. There's no fee even if you go through CRO? That is definitely news to me. If that is the case, then it might sway me in the future towards a DVC reservation vs. paying the fee in a normal room.

You can run the numbers for yourself. Try to book a cash reservation at a DVC resort for four adults, get the price and then change it to two adults. The cost doesn't change. :)

Yes, they need to be added to the reservation but there is no nightly extra adults fee, or any extra cost, at DVC resorts.

This is great information for a family with an almost-18-year-old. Based on your post, we will avoid the extra adult fee by trying to book a DVC villa next January. Yay - thank you!

You're welcome. :thumbsup2 The DVC Villas, the Family Suites and the Cabins at Ft. Wilderness all do not charge the extra adult fee per night.

I think it is also important to make sure he has a 1 bedroom and not a deluxe studio room. Deluxe studios have a sofa bed right next to the queen bed in 1 room together.

Here's the reason for staying in your own resort room for that last night. You will consistently have a room to use that last day. Sure you could ask your friend if you could crash at his place that last night. But, that means he then has to add you to his reservation, then DME reservations have to be made, if using it. You will then, possibly, be in your friend's hair that night and the next morning. Now, that may not be the case...I stay in my friend's room all the time, but I do try to pay my way. I would offer to pay half the room rate that night, or buy him a nice meal. It's not just about 'sharing his room', it's also about being in his space...and some people just aren't comfortable with people in their space. I know I love being by myself in a room!
So, figure out what the nightly rate is for that room, then offer to pay half. That seems fair, or buy a really nice meal. Breakfast doesn't seem like quite enough.

Paying half the room rate for a 1 bdrm is probably more than the cost of another night in value resort, but repaying with a nice meal would be enough imo. It's only one night, depending on their relationship it's prob not to big of an imposition. It wouldn't be for me anyway.
