Cranberry & Pineapple Continued.....Again.

Jrsy - I wonder if it is the same owner of the Pats off of Arapahoe Rd and I-25? I am going to have to try there now, thanks for the suggestion!
Same owners as that place and the one on Market Street, but the one in Littleton is more of a bar & grill than just a place to get cheesesteaks.

If anyone is interested, here are the photos from our trip and a short video clip of the rainstorm that you will read about in part 2 of my trip report:

Wow, that is quite the rainstorm! We had some of those afternoon soakers while we were in FL....crazy amounts of water. How wet did you guys get? When we were at WDW we were soaked but at least it was warm rain! Loved the pictures, those coasters look like a lot of fun. Some day we will have to get out there, I love rollercoasters. The view from your hotel was nice, seemed like it was so relaxing and calming.

We didn't actually end up getting too wet because it started slowly and we had the foresight to stop into an arcade right before it got really bad. That's where I shot the video from. That hotel surrounded by farms was serene. If we'd actually stayed in Lancaster, the hotels would have been like staying right along Wadsworth near the mall; just tons of businesses and a lot of traffic.

HersheyPark didn’t open until 10am on Thursday morning, so we had time to take advantage of the hotel’s hot breakfast, which was waffles in addition to the standard bagels, doughnuts and cereal. There was a pond in front of the hotel that attracted ducks and geese, so the hotel had a coin-operated food dispenser installed so you can feed them. We made sure they had some breakfast, too, before we headed to HersheyPark. Of course a brief detour was required over to the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee before we entered the parking lot. We were pleased that we were up close once again and took that as a good sign that the park wouldn’t be too crowded. We suffered through the singing cows again to get our chocolate fix before entering HersheyPark.

We started with the roller coasters again, riding The Comet and Great Bear, but also tried out some of the other rides, like the Coal Cracker, which is a flume ride, and the Flying Falcon, which took us high above the park while spinning around. The entrance to ZooAmerica was near the exit from the Flying Falcon, so Tammy suggested we take a walk through. ZooAmerica is a “North American Wildlife Park,” so it is pretty small as far as zoos go. It was interesting, though, so we were glad we had taken some time to enjoy it, especially in light of this year being their 100th. Once we’d returned to HersheyPark, we were on the lookout for rides we hadn’t ridden the previous night as we also rode several of the coasters again.

I was taking pictures of the various rides whenever I could, but the trees throughout the park were so tall and so dense that it was difficult to find a location to get shots of some rides. We also realized what a visionary Walt Disney was with his hub and spokes layout for Disneyland and Walt Disney World, especially when we discovered a section of the park that we hadn’t even passed through yet. The lines were short and the park was not very busy, so we still had some opportunity to ride some coasters without having to get off and go through the line again. In fact, on the Lightning Racers, Tammy was in the front of the Lightning side while Alex and I got the front seat on the Thunder side, but we had no one else in our coaster while Tammy had 6-8 more people riding with her. We also rode the swinging pirate ship ride with Alex in the rear seat on one end and Tammy and me in the rear seat on the other end with no one in between us.

When we were starting to feel hungry and ready for a break, we headed back to the car and drove over to Friendly Rising Sun again. Alex discovered a touch-screen video game system and amused himself after placing his lunch order. I discovered $1.55 mugs of Yuengling Lager and amused myself after placing my lunch order. Tammy bought herself a t-shirt. After again enjoying substantial meals at prices that were dramatically less than we would have paid for essentially fast food inside the park, we stopped briefly at the hotel to freshen ourselves up a bit. When we were heading back over to HersheyPark, we noted that there were some dark clouds moving in, so we were prepared for the possibility of rain at some point.

We hadn’t ridden the SkyView yet, which is similar to the old Skyway at Disneyland and WDW, so we took that leisurely ride. The guy running the ride warned us that we were under a thunderstorm warning and we could potentially end up stranded if the ride was struck by lightning and the power went out; he was a real optimist. We didn’t realize that rain basically paralyzed the park, however, until later and not because of lightning taking out the power. We survived the SkyView and rode the swing ride just as the rain started. By the time we finished, the rain was getting a bit harder, though still not a full-on rainstorm. It was enough rain, apparently, to start closing rides, though. We couldn’t get on The Comet, the Coal Cracker or Great Bear and, as the rain started to come down harder, we ducked into an arcade. After playing some games for a bit, we checked on the weather and found a torrential downpour. It was so bad that we watched as some trash cans started to float away.

It rained long and hard and, by the time it started to let up, we were ready for a change of scenery, so we dashed through the lighter rain to the shops near the front gate. We browsed for a while and picked up a few things but the rain continued to fall lightly. We weren’t expecting any rides to reopen at least until the rain stopped, so we finally just decided to leave the park and go over to Chocolate World and do some more shopping over there. Imagine our surprise to find Chocolate World locked up and empty. We never did get an explanation as to why the rain caused an indoor attraction to close down and why they didn’t take advantage of all of the potential shoppers. We finally just decided to call it a night but headed over to Friendly’s for something to eat before going back to the hotel.

Friday started out pretty much the same as Thursday, with breakfast, feeding the ducks and stopping for coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts. Once we were inside the parking lot, however, we could see that this day would be different than the previous one. The area where we’d parked the previous day was already full of buses and we ended up parking significantly farther away than we had before. We had expected Friday to be busier, so we were glad we’d ridden everything we’d wanted to plenty of times knowing that we’d likely be getting in fewer rides. It was crazy busy right from the start, so we were choosier about which rides we were willing to wait in long lines for. Ultimately, it wasn’t too bad and some lines, though longer than the previous days, still weren’t too long.

Based on the matching t-shirts that a lot of the kids were wearing, it appeared as though a lot of the groups were 8th graders on class trips. On the plus side, there were a lot more redheads his age around, so Alex was in his element. On the negative side, 8th graders do tend to think that they’re all that, so there was attitude all over the place. We left for a while in early afternoon for another hearty lunch and a couple of cold Yuenglings at Friendly Rising Sun. We’d also been stopping in just down the street from Friendly Rising Sun at a Turkey Hill convenience store for some of their outstanding iced tea each time we stopped off for lunch. We went back to the hotel again for a bit, then headed back over to HersheyPark.

When we got back into the parking lot this time, we were even farther out than we had been earlier that day. We figured we walked off our lunch as we trekked from the car back to the gate. As the hour grew later, we assumed that the buses would gradually begin to depart and that turned out to be correct. It was still busier than the previous days, but not as bad as that morning had been. Another rain shower passed through that afternoon, though not nearly as severe as the one on Thursday had been. Again, though, we were surprised that even the rides that were entirely indoors were shut down; you could see that we weren’t the only ones baffled by this. As the rain let up, we started heading toward the far end of the park, thinking that the coasters beyond the water park would have shorter lines and the walk would allow time to get them up and running again.

As we made our way over toward Lightning Racers, we saw a rainbow for the second day in a row. We had to wait a few minutes before Lightning Racers opened again, but there weren’t too many people waiting so we got right on once it was ready. We rode a few times before heading back through the park again and getting our last rides on some of our favorites. Surprisingly, there were still a few buses there pretty late, but we figured we’d hit the park hard during the time we’d been there and didn’t feel like we’d missed anything, so we headed out feeling pretty good.

Saturday morning was Tammy’s spa treatment at The Hotel Hershey, so I drove her up there after breakfast, then went back to the hotel to make sure we were ready to check out. She got finished up quicker than she thought, so Alex and I had to hustle the luggage down to the car and check out, then go pick her up. She’d had a very nice time and was glad that she’d indulged. We were heading down to Lancaster for the day but stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts yet again and I talked Tammy into buying a t-shirt that says “Friends don’t let friends drink Starbucks.” It wasn’t a very long drive from Hershey to Lancaster and we ended up stopping at the visitor’s center to figure out what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go. Some of the places Tammy and I used to visit when we lived in NJ were no longer around, so we figured out what was and made sure to visit those places. We had a nice meal in Intercourse, PA, but even that place had changed a bit; I guess you just can’t stop progress.

After lunch, we went over to the stadium where the Lancaster Barnstormers play, wanting to pick up a souvenir for my SIL’s husband. The guy running the team store asked if we wanted to see the stadium, which they were preparing for a game that night. We took him up on his offer and he shared a lot of information about the stadium, the team and the fans. It was a nice experience. When we left there, we headed for Lititz, PA where there was a company called Wilbur Chocolate. Apparently, we had not had enough chocolate while in Hershey and, once we’d parked and opened the doors, the smell of chocolate was all around us. We found it interesting to learn that Wilbur Chocolate had a product similar to the Hershey’s Kiss, but with an imprint of petals and the name Wilbur imprinted on the bottom, that they called Wilbur Buds. They were also foil wrapped, but Hershey apparently had better marketing and the Kiss became synonymous with Hershey.

Once we’d finished up in Lititz, we went to check in at our hotel in Manheim. We’d covered a lot of ground around Lancaster, so our plan for the evening was to rest up a bit, head out for some dinner and then swim at the hotel pool. Since we’d learned about The Friendly Rising Sun from the owner of the motel we’d stayed in on our first trip to Hershey so many years ago, and it is still one of our favorite restaurants, I asked the desk clerk there in Manheim where she recommended for dinner. She gave us a couple of options, one of which was a brewpub that served barbecue called JoBoy’s Brew Pub. After relaxing in the rocking chairs on the front porch of the hotel for a little while, we drove up to JoBoy’s.

Loving your TR! You guys were busy!! I love the shirt that Tammy got at DD, I never thought I would be such a huge fan and crave a donut shop. :lmao: That is crazy that even the inside attractions were shut down for the rain storm. Glad you didn't get stuck on Skyview in a thunderstorm. :rotfl:

JoBoy’s Brew Pub has only been open since April 1 but we were still expecting it to be hopping on a Saturday night. It wasn’t very busy when we got there, but business did pick up. We were welcomed by one of the owners and he and I got to chatting about brewing so he offered me a tour of his brewing setup. Once we’d ordered, including a sampler of his four beers, Jeff took me through the kitchen, which smelled heavenly of smoked meats. His set-up, though larger than mine, was smaller than I expected for a brew pub. He told me that he sometimes brews twice a day, then goes home to shower before being back to greet the customers. I was looking forward to sampling his beers.

Back at the table, Tammy had been working on an appetizer of smoked cabbage, which was surprisingly scrumptious. My beers arrived and they all rocked. I’ve been to plenty of brew pubs where some of the beers were good and others were mediocre, but all four of Jeff’s were quite good. When the food arrived, it measured up as well. We really enjoyed our meal and, as we were heading out, I thanked Jeff and he gave me a pint glass with their logo on it.

Back at the hotel, Alex and I decided to take a swim in the small pool out behind the hotel. Being back there really gave a sense of being in the middle of a farming community. There were some soccer fields back there, too, but there were barns and silos visible in every direction. We swam until it started to get dark, then went upstairs and made sure we would be ready for the drive back to Philadelphia in the morning.

This hotel also had a pretty decent breakfast in the morning but, for once, we didn’t stop at Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee on the way out of town. We did stop at Turkey Hill for iced tea and Tastykakes then hit the road, taking a different route than we had from Philadelphia to Hershey. When we arrived in Philadelphia, we parked under the Independence Visitors Center so that we’d be central to the historic sites. We explored the Visitors Center then crossed the street to go see the Liberty Bell. Not surprisingly, things had changed in the 20 plus years since I’d last visited, but the Visitors Center was useful and the Liberty Bell was now closer to Independence Hall. We took some pictures of the Liberty Bell, then walked along the front of Independence Hall. We didn’t do the tour of Independence Hall mainly because it was very busy and we didn’t think we’d be able to get tickets for a tour before we were planning to head out of the city.

We walked around the historic area, including Christ Church Cemetery where Benjamin Franklin is buried, until we were tired of walking. We headed back to the Visitors Center, had a quick snack, then got back in the car and drove toward our hotel. We did make one brief stop, back at Pop’s Italian Ices in south Philly, to get one more awesome Italian ice before we left. We ate them on the edge of the park across the street again then stopped in an Italian bakery on our way back to the car for a cannoli and an éclair, which were both heavenly.

We made our way back to the same hotel we’d stayed at the first night, checked in, then called my cousin, Corinne, who’d said she’d drive to Philly to meet us for dinner. She suggested a restaurant not far from the IKEA, which made it easy for us to find. We rested up for a bit, then drove down to meet her and had another hearty dinner. After eating, we followed her along the river to a place where she knew we could park, then we walked along Penn’s Landing, which is right along the Delaware River. Alex and my cousin’s daughter, Emily, had met on a few occasions before but, once they were together, it was like they’d never been apart. They had fun while Tammy and I caught up with my cousin while she pushed Ali, her littlest little, in a stroller.

We enjoyed the sights along the river for a while before turning back and returning to our cars where we said good-bye to Corinne, Emily and Ali. We went back to our hotel and made sure everything was ready for our return home the next day. We had something to eat at the continental breakfast before loading up the car and checking out. Returning the rental car was a breeze since we were so close to the airport, so the shuttle was dropping us off at the terminal earlier than we expected. Check-in with Southwest was smooth, as well, but the line for security was long so we plodded through that before heading for our gate while keeping our eyes peeled for a Dunkin’ Donuts in the terminal.

There was a “business center” right at our gate where Alex could plug in his laptop and entertain himself during the wait for our flight without running down the battery. There was also a McDonalds nearby, so we got coffee from there and sat by a window to read and wait. We grabbed something to eat to tide us over for the flight and, before we knew it, it was time to board. I think we ended up in about row 8 or so since we had “A” boarding passes that were numbered lower than we’d had flying out. The flight was longer coming home but it wasn’t too bad. It seemed like it took forever for our luggage to make it out onto the carousel, but we soon had it gathered up and met Tammy’s mom outside.

Just read trip report #2. I love Tammy's tshirt. That is too funny. Chris needs a shirt like that since he is all about Dunkin Donut coffee. Wow, that was a lot of rain. I am totally surprised that they would close the shops. Certainly doesn't make sense to me!

Off to read #3.........

Jrsy, I want to become a pro at smoking meat. I love it sooo much and have a smoker but it isn't like the real think since they put rubs on the meats. I will have to do some research. Oh wait, you were probably more into the brewery. My bad, LOL. Tammy's cabbage sounds like something I would love. I am so glad that Alex and Emily hit it off. I grew up close to my cousins and have so many fond memories.

Sounds like a fun trip and a perfect end. Is Tammy having withdrawals from Dunkin Donuts? I am always disappointed that there isn't a DD at the Orlando Airport....in south FL there are DD's everywhere, but up in Orlando they have Krispy Kreme.

Great TR Jrsy. It sounds like you all had a lot of fun!

Sandy, we have some smoking books. We love our smoker. We have done a few turkeys, several pork shoulders, beef brisquets, chicken legs, sausages, potatoes.

Ok, here is my TR.
Part one

Friday night/Sat
Flight went off without a hitch. It was a little turbulent, but not too bad. We saw a really cool lightning storm off in the distance from the plane. We landed about 1:15am on Sat morning. Brad and Rachel went to get the luggage and Jake and I went to the Hyatt and checked in. We fell into bed and asleep shortly after we hit the room. After we woke up we hit the breakfast buffet in the restaurant upstairs. Since we are AAA members the adult meals were free, we just had to pay for the kids (and the mimosas we had). My dad picked us up at about 12:30 and we headed to the condo. There was a 24hr pool right across the parking lot from our condo. We hit the pool after we got to the condo for a bit and then decided to walk over to the lake and check out the water trampoline. On our way over there the clouds came up and the lightning started. We went back to the rooms and just hung out the rest of the day.

Sunday
Decided to not get up at the crack of dawn and hit MK. We ended up getting there close to 11am. Headed to Space Mountain to get fast passes right away. While we were waiting for those, we went to the Laugh Floor and Buzz Lightyear. My mom is the reigning Buzz champ. She got something like 600,000. We then did Space Mtn and got some lunch at Cosmic Rays. Some of us went to COP and others went on the people movers. Then we went to the speedway before heading over to Frontierland. Once at Frontierland, we got FP for Thunder Mtn and got in line for Splash Mtn. My sis-in-law doesn’t ride much of anything, my mom doesn’t do rollercoasters at all and Jake doesn’t like rollercoasters either with the exception of Thunder Mtn. After Thunder Mtn we met up with Mom and Shannon and went on Pirates of Carribean then had an afternoon snack. The boys all went to the Jungle Cruise and the girls all went on Aladdin which was hilarious since Shannon was completely freaked out. I have a great picture of her, but she won’t let me post it on FB. We then went shopping at the Christmas store and met up with the guys again. We all went to Philharmagic and It’s a small World. After that, Rachel and Garrett went back on the speedway, dad and I had a seat and everyone else went on the teacups. Then we had dinner at someplace attached to It’s a small world. It was pretty tasty. It was getting dark now. We split up a little bit. Rachel and Garrett went to see how the line for Space Mountain was, Dad and Jake went back to see the Laugh floor again, Mom, Brad, Mike and Shannon went to stake out a place for the fireworks and I went to Philharmagic again ( I just love that show). We met up for the fireworks and then hung out a little longer before we left for the condo. On our way out, we were walking down the middle of Main Street and there were people lined up on the sides to watch the 11pm parade again. Some of us were waving to everyone and pretending we were in the parade (Mom didn’t think we were funny). One little boy about 3 or 4 said to his mom “They aren’t the parade”. It was cute.

Part two
Monday
We had already decided to do Epcot on Monday and stay for the fireworks there too, but to get there around 1:30 or so in the afternoon. Mother Nature had a different time in store for us. We had monsoon like rains off and on all morning and into the early afternoon. We all went to Applebee’s around 2 and had lunch and then got to Epcot about 3:30. Brad, Jake and I went to get FP for Soarin’ for everyone while they all went on the ball ride. FP were all distributed already so Jake and Brad went to Mission Space since the wait was only about 30 min. We all met up again to do the Ellen ride and then split up again. Some of us went single rider for Test Track and some went to Living Land (or whatever it’s called). We then headed over to the worlds and split up. I got my margarita in Mexico and was happy. We all just ate where ever we wanted in the worlds. Jake wanted a Braut in Germany. It was pretty good. Dad, Brad and I went to Morraco for dinner and the rest of them ate in America I think. I don’t think that is where mom really wanted to eat, but she was going with the flow. We watched the firework show from morraco. It was really a great place to see it. I had never seen it from the world side before.

Tuesday
Universal day. We started the day split. Those of us that wanted to ride all of the big roller coasters got up early and got to Universal by opening at 9am. The rest came a little later. Rachel, Garrett and I all wanted to have two days at Universal, one day for each park. Everyone else only wanted one day there so they got a park hopper for one day. Getting there early worked out great. We walked on the Hulk. Then went over to dueling dragons, but it wasn’t opening until later in the day. We went to the Jurassic Park water ride, I didn’t get very wet and discovered it was because I sat behind my brother ( he blocked it all). We also rode Ripsaw Falls which is another water ride, I sat behind Mike again and didn’t get very wet then either. We then went to the Spiderman ride to meet up with everyone else. After that we had lunch, that was the longest line we were in all day. It was pretty ridiculous. I think we were in line there for 40 minutes. After lunch we went on yet another water ride, pluto’s barges. Mom, Brad and Jake opted out because they didn’t want to get wet. The rest of us went on and got completely soaked. It was a blast. Our groups then split up. Rachel, Garrett and I stayed at Islands of Adventure and everyone else went to Universal Studios. We finally got to ride Dueling Dragons, we did both the Fire and Ice side. I liked Fire better. I kept trying to sneak peeks at Harry Potter too, but they had it pretty closed off. I also made the kids go to Dr Seuss land with me too. It was fun. We rode Hulk one more time and were ready to head out. We met up with everyone on CityWalk and went to Bubba Gump’s for dinner. Lots of fun there!!

Wed
Rachel, Garrett and I got up early for Universal Studios again. We were there by 9 again. Got right on the Rip, Ride Rocket roller coaster. That was pretty cool. When you get on you go straight up though. It was scary, I had to close my eyes going up. After that we went and rode the Mummy twice, went and saw the Twister show and the Disaster show. Twister was a waste of time, but Disaster was pretty fun. Had some good burgers at a place there. Then went to ride Men in Black (like Buzz Lightyear, but more intense). We rode that twice, headed to the Simpsons ride and then ET. I think that is all we rode there and then stared heading out around 2:30 or so. On the way out we saw Shrek, Fionna and Donkey so the kids stopped for a picture. Donkey was funny, he kept calling Garrett, Harry Potter. Once back at the condo we all went to lake and the kids did the water trampoline for an hour, we then went back to the pool and played until dinner time.

Final part
Thursday
Epcot again since we didn’t stay too long the first day. We got there around 10:30. Got our FP for Soarin’, but couldn’t go back until around 4 pm to ride. Mike and Shannon took off to do their own thing. Brad and the boys went to Mission Space to do the advanced ride. Mom, Dad, Rach and I went to to test track. When boys got done they came to Test track too. Then we all headed to the worlds again. Margarita time again, Jake got a big plate of nachos and we all had some. Rachel had some quesadillas and then she took off. She had a friend from Colorado that was at Epcot on that same day. The rest of us kept wandering around the world. Dad and the boys did the ride in Mexico and Norway and then we ate in China again. I think after that Dad and the boys went back to do test track again. Brad, Mom and I kept wandering around the world at a nice slow pace. We met up with everyone except Mike and Shannon back at England and then started heading to Soarin’ for our FP. After our FP we had another snack and met up with Mike and Shannon. Mike and the boys went to test track one last time and the rest of us went to Mousegears for shopping. We left the park around 5 or a little after and went back to the condo and ordered pizza.

Friday
Went to Disney Studios around 10am. It was Star Wars weekend and really crowded. The roller coaster fans went to Rockin roller coaster, grabbed a FP and then got in the single rider line. Mom and Jake went to Big Movie Ride and then Star Tours. Shannon went to get a good spot for the parade so she could see her storm troopers. After we rode RRC we went to Star Tours and the muppet show. We then met up with everyone for lunch. It was really hot and everyone was miserable so right after lunch it was time for our FP, we rode that and then headed back to the condo. When we got back, Dad, Mike, Shannon and I went to the pool everyone else just hung out and relaxed. We all went out for Mexican that night, margaritas again. Yummy.

Sat was back to the airport and a LONG wait before we finally got to come home. Whew…. I’m tired just writing all of this out.

I have some pictures up on my FB account if you want to see them.

Happy Fathers day, Jrsy!

Cristi, loved the trip report. All that talk about WDW makes me more anxious to get there before our MV cruise. What is with FL and the rain?

Happy Belated Father's Day to Jrsy and Brad! Hope you had a wonderful day.

Cristi - What a nice vacation! Did you get to ride Toy Story Mania while you were at Hollywood Studios? I love that ride! How far away was the condo from Disney and Universal? It sounded like it was a perfect distance. I want to go to Universal one day next time we are out there for longer. Off to check out your pictures.

I'm with you Heidi. I want to check out Universal Studios next time we are out for awhile. I remember when we went to the CA one that I was the only one that liked Universal Studios. I know how it has grown however.

Heidi, I didn't actually get to do Toy Story Mania. It was Star Wars weekend and really crowded at the park that day. It was so hot that mom wasn't feeling well. I think we were all tired (it was our last day at the parks) so we skipped it. We did Rockin roller coaster twice, Star tours, muppet 3d and then some people did great movie ride and some watched the parade. Then we ate lunch did a little shopping (I needed to use up my money on my rewards card) and left.

It probably took us 15-20 minutes to get to Disney from the condo and a little longer to Universal.

I liked Universal. I will definitely go back. Two days there is plenty though.

So, Cristi, I finally got to read your trip report...now that I am back at work...

You never went to Animal Kingdom to ride Expedition Everest?

Sounds like a fun trip and between you and us we rode a ton of roller coasters!

Still waiting for Heidi's trip report...
