Craigslist - do you give refunds?

We just bought a riding lawnmower off Craigslist. It was $150 and we bartered for part of it. The guy delivered it and we tried it and it seemed fine but the axle broke the 2nd time we used it. I am sure it was cracked, but it was still a good deal even with the new parts we need. We didn't even think about asking for a refund. Thats ridiculous. We did call and leave a message asking if he knew where to get replacement parts locally and he never called us back so I am guessing he knew, but we are still fine with it.

OP here. Well, my older son emailed him and told him how the charger should look while it is charging (red light on until it's charged, then the green light lights up). That way if the outlet they are using is not working for some reason, they will know. We also let him know that the scooter could not be in the "on" position while charging and the reset button had to be pushed in, not popped out and that it had to charge for 12 hours the first time and 8 hours after being used. He also informed them that when riding the scooter, they had to put one foot on the scooter and make it go a push or two before turning the throttle or whatever you call the thing on the handle that makes it go. Hopefully, one of those things was the problem and it will work. I also had him forward the link for the Razor scooter website. Hopefully we will not hear from him again.:wizard:

At this point, I know it worked and I guess the poster who said the electricity in my house will not be different from his electricity so me offering to charge it for him is pointless. I was just trying to think of something to help him.

I have learned something from this experience though. I will change my Craigslist ads to say not only cash only, but add All sales final and I will use another email address, and I will meet them in a public place. This person has my phone number and my address. He wasn't creepy in the least, but still I think the public meeting thing is a good idea. I had a good experience this week though too. An elderly woman came over to my house and picked up a little tikes stroller for a child she babysits for. She saw my dog and we started talking about her dog. She was a nice lady and I'm glad I had a chance to meet her. :lovestruc

Lesson learned. :idea:I'll keep you updated.:cutie:

No refunds! This ain't Wal-Mart!

Just a bit of advice.... when you're selling something whether it be on ebay, Craigs List or through your local newpaper ads, you should have the disclaimer:

ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS-IS. ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS. ALL ITEMS ARE CLEARLY DESCRIBED. ANY QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ASKED BEFORE THE TRANSACTION.

In addition to this, on any Bill of Sale, I would very clearly put

ALL SALES FINAL
NO REFUNDS
ITEM IS BEING SOLD AS-IS

This way, there is no confusion.

I also agree with other posters who've stated they wouldn't give their real email addy or meet at their home. I do a lot of Freecycling and whenever I'm giving something away, I always meet the other person at a public place, like a shopping center. I would never invite someone I don't know to my home to pick something up. You just don't know who's on the other end of that email. Thankfully, I've never ever had a problem on Freecycle and have met some great people but you still never know. Better safe than sorry!

If I was paying $200 for a camera. I would be trying it out before I left the persons house.

As for tag sales. Most stuff at tag sales are stuff people don't want and though you or I may only put out stuff that works, there are plenty of people out their that will sell you junk that doesn't. I would either ask to see it working or get it home and it not work, well shame on me. I would never go back to a tag sale and ask for a refund.

Really? I have been buying from yard sales for years and I agree for the most part but when it comes to certain items I expect the seller to be telling me the truth and if I paid good money for something I expect it to work.

I have been looking at camera's on craigslist and this has made me think twice about it. I would not expect to drop $200 plus on a camera and be told it works and get it home and find out it didn't. I would expect my money back.

All that said it does depend on the circumstances, in this case the buyers saw this scooter working and now says it doesn't. A case could be made that the charger is not working and it will not charge(giving them the benefit of the doubt) or they could have done what everyone thinks they did and strip parts from it they need or even bring back their scooter and try passing it off as the one they bought.

Not sure what I would do in this situation but next time I would make sure I marked the screws or something so you can tell if the item had been tampered with. Even mark the item somewhere so you know whether or not it is even your item.

This is a difficult call.

Good Luck I feel bad for you being in this situation.

Could just be that the battery has finally ran outta juice. I just purchased a car from Craigslist this past weekend. Turned over and started up fine. Drove it around the block and 30 miles home. Went out 2 days later to start it up, wouldn't start. Turns out the battery needs replacing. When you buy used items, there should be a certain understanding that problems can arise. I would not dare call up the seller and ask for a refund. Besides, almost all used items purchased are considered AS IS unless a warranty of some sort is implied.
