We currently have ressies at YC and WL for December. DH recently says why not CR tower room instead of WL. Beside the fact that WL having better holiday mood and the sentimental reason that we honeymooned there, the biggest sticking point with CR is my two DSs (5 and 3). I have a mental picture of two of them trying to climb the ledge(sp?) overlooking the atrium. Is this a valid concern or a fruit of my overprotective imagination? I would appreciate some inputs on this, especially from those who have stayed with young children.

Thanks in advance.

That's a toughie. We stayed in a tower room at the Contemporary and it was very nice to have a castle view (it bothered us to sit on the balcony and hear the noise of all the busses going to MK). The purple and green and silver holiday decorations were modern. Since we have no kids, I wasn't looking at child safety issues. I've read that some parents will never stay in a balcony room anywhere because they're concerned about kids falling, but I'm sure many other parents don't feel that way. I can't EVER remember reading about a kid who fell into the atrium. It's convenient to walk to and from MK (assume you'll have a stroller for the kids) in case there's huge crowds.

So, what's my contribution to your dilemma? To verify that WL at Christmas time is gorgeous!!!! It's so comfortable and charming and real old-fashioned Christmas. What better time to enjoy the massive fireplace in the lobby. We love WL and December is about the most beautiful time to be there. That said, it's just a boat ride away from CR, so you could plan a meal or two over there, or just take the boat to enjoy the trip and the decor. Hope you have a great trip!

Kay,
We were at the CR in April of this year with DD 13, DS 8 and DD 4. I never had a fear of the inside of the building and my kids falling over. We had to lift our 4 year old up to see over. I dont think there is any way she could have climbed up by herself, plus the only time we were out there looking over was when we were all together and heading out to eat or to a park. My bigger fear was the balcony on the outside. We were on the 11th floor facing the MK with breathtaking views of the MK especially at night with the castle changing colors and watching the fireworks from our balcony. The sliding door was so heavy, though, that our younger one couldnt open it herself and was only out there with my husband or myself. We very much enjoyed the CR. It was our first time there and it suited us perfectly. The pool, playground, and game room were big hits with our kids - not to mention the fact that the monorail drops you right off below your room. When we were so tired coming in at night all you had to do was take an elevator ride up a few flights and boom you were at your door. Our kids rode the monorail at night sometimes just to ride it. We rode many times in front because there was never a line to ride there. I would stay in the room and get our 4yr old to sleep and my DH would take the other 2 and enjoy the sites from the monorail as much as they wanted.
Im sure you will have a great time whatever your decision is- its Disney!!::MinnieMo

Unless your kids are well equipped pole vaulters I don't think there is any way for them to get over the inside wall over the concourse (or whatever they call it). It is close to 5 feet high and curves inward slightly with nothing to hold onto. Plus it isn't the kind of place you would let them play unattended in the halls anyways. The outside balconies are big, but as the previous poster stated the doors are heavy and have one of those reach up security locks so little ones can't wander out.
It is really a fun place...the views can't be beat....
Frankly I think there would be a much greater chance of getting over the rails that overlook the WL lobby than the ones at the CR!! (just thought I'd give you something else to worry about!! LOL ain't maternal guilt great!!)

We've stayed at the CR 14 times over the years, starting when our children were 4,6 and 9 - we never worried about the atrium. There is a solid wall with a railing on top - they are one unit, and the railing sort of curves backwards and is very slippery - possibly on purpose. I think a child trying very hard to climb it would just slip back down. Also it's set fairly high. IMHO, it's nothing to worry about! Have a great time, whatever your decision!

Thank you everyone for your input. However, I was able to convice my DH to stick with WL; he agreed that $100/night we would save by staying at WL instead of CR could come in handy for other things--like on toys for the boys. For our next visit though, I think we'll split between CR and AKL.

By the way, SB in KY,

I think there would be a much greater chance of getting over the rails that overlook the WL lobby than the ones at the CR!!

LOL! Thanks for giving me a new nightmare! :p

Did you know that a woman's life expectancy decreases by 9 months for each male child she has?
