CR as DVC...what's the draw?

Ok, I tagged along with my brother to a conferrence this past weekend and he was put up at the Contemporary. Now, outside of SSR(which is "home") this is my first experience with a "deluxe" resort. I know there are alot of fans of CR, and maybe I missed the charm of the resort, but I was underimpressed to say the least.

The room...we did have a rehabbed room, in the south wing. It was nice, big...the beds were comfy...but there was a noticable lack of drawer space. The bathroom...once again...lots of space, but not much in the way of counter space unless you wanted to put all your stuff below the sink. What bothered me most about the bathroom were the sliding doors and don't even get me started on the motion activated fans in there (what's that about? :confused3 ).

The transportation...first, I know part of the big draw to this resort, is the monorail. And, coming back from MK it was nice. So if you have little ones, and/or the bulk of your time is at MK, this is a big plus. But going to Epcot on the monorail, with the transfer at the TTC, it starts to lose a little of it's draw, imo. And the buses...I've usually stayed in the moderate level or value, but does the CR always share buses with the other MK hotels? Going to the parks we usually stopped at WL, Poly, and/or GF. When this seemed most silly was leaving MGM after Fantasmic, when they had GF, Poly, and CR sharing the same bus. I know there's a system based on ridership, but renting a car almost seemed like it would be a neccessity.

Food...now I know as a DVC property this would fall as a priority. I've done the buffet at Chef Mickey's, and I'll take everyone's word on Cali Grill, only did breakfast at the Steakhouse. There was one thing that bothered me a little and one thing that bothered me aquite a biit. The little thing is that they are at minimal staffing at night(around 9 pm'ish) in the Food/Fun center. When I wandered down there for a snack one night, one cast member was swamped. She handled it really well, but they really could/should have atleast a second person behind the counter. Now, this could have been a one time thing. The bigger thing happened when I took my refillable mug to the pool bar and was told that the only place to get it refilled is the Food/Fun center. :sad2: It wasn't busy, there was no line...I know it's probably policy...but what a lame policy. Ok, maybe not so much of a big thing, but it's a convienence thing, especially staying in the south wing or even just hanging out by the pool. :drinking1

I think the thing that was the biggest disappointment was what felt like a lack of theming. Even my brother, only a recent Disney convert, said they "left out the magic at CR". I guess we like feeling we are someplace special, and this just felt to us like a regular hotel.

Now this is just my opinion from one experience. I know they are working to revitalize this property. But I am curious and would love to hear why so many Dis'ers have been long awaiting confirmation that CR will become a DVC property. So please, chime in. :hyper2:

Location is (obviously) one of the big draws for the CR. You can walk to the MK. The monorail runs through it. It's an original "icon" WDW resort. My DH and DS both love it, but its charms have always been a little lost on me. I prefer a "cozier" resort.

I asked this very question a few weeks ago on some thread. Do a search of my recent posts to find it. There seemed to be two answers most often given - an affinity for CR as one of the original resorts with a loyal following, and access to MK and the monorail. I came away from the discussion with a new appreciaition of CR lovers and their feelings about the resort. I don't know if I'd buy any points there, but the discussion was interesting!!!

+1 to all the respondents, and look at the first half of your post; you answered your own questioin.

Definately location. I would add that staying at the Contemporary for your first deluxe experience may give you the wrong impression. Just my opinion, but the Contemporaryy is probably my least favorite. The other deluxes are better themed, newer, and have more activities and ammenities.

I would much rather see one of the other deluxes get tagged with a DVC resort next to it, but for now the rumor is the Contemporary STOL and North Wing will turn into a DVC resort.

Indeed, an icon, especially to us of a "certain age";) .

To Disneyana buffs it's almost a historical landmark.

If you have to ask, you just don't get it.:goodvibes

We stayed at CR a few years back. We are firm believers in trying every resort at least once, and don't go back if not a good experience. Well I thought I would hate CR, but we got a great rate, so we gave it a try.

I was so surprised that we really liked it there. I don't know why we liked it. I think maybe it has something to do with the fact that Walt designed it.

We won't buy points there (IF it becomes a DVC), but I would love to stay there as a DVC member.

I can understand why it would not appeal to some though. :thumbsup2

Don't look for my name on the CR - DVC waiting list !!!

To me CR is nothing more than an overgrown motel 6...which happens to have a monorail running through it...and is right next to MK. I think that Disney is afraid that if they actually turn CR into a "resort", then it would become too popular, so they are leaving it as a motel 6 knowing that enough people will overlook it's many shortcomings simply to have the location and the monorail.

I will reply even though CR itself is not a draw for me unless it becomes DVC:

Have you been in a DVC 2 BR? Plus the new DVC wing would be new from the ground up-likely totally different than what you imagine.

Again DVC may command a better bus system, but lets face it, staying there would likely concentrate on MK visits.

Some DVC Resorts have no food at all after 9PM and no room service. You just named 3 very big restaurant draws (OK 2) of WDW on site and a bigger food court than any DVC.

Again-whole new building. There is the new W Astoria coming if you prefer. I will take CRV any day.

This is the resort that will get me to take the DVC plunge! For me it is sentimental - on a couple of trips to WDW as a kid I always envied the lucky CR guests as we piled in the car & schlepped back to the Days Inn Kissimee.
They also have the best watersports facility and great shopping! :thumbsup2

I know the DVC portion would be nice and I am familiar with the general layouts for the villas. I am very happy w/ DVC and the accomodations. :goodvibes

My general questioning wasn't so much a "why you like DVC?", more "why do you want a DVC at the Contemporary vs say the Poly or AKL?". You, yourself said as a resort alone, you are not particularly attracted to the CR. But lets face it, as DVC members we also look at the whole picture as far as things like the themeing, the pool(s), food options, transportation, size, layout, etc. So, if the primary resort is a place you like, then I could understand why you'd want to buy in there.

#1 reason for me is location!! Nothing is better than getting on the monorail and getting off at the cont, Poly or GF.

#2 The contemporary is really cool. Its like a little city. You go to one floor to hop on the monorail, go to another to eat (3 different floors), another floor to shop, another to sleep etc etc.

#3- Being so close to the Magic Kingdom--being able to watch the fireworks from your room or the rooftop!!

I own at the BWV and picked that for the location too.

Unfortunately, the bus, boat and monorail transportation all takes alot of time. The BWI and BWV share the buses with S./D and yacht and bc. I wasn't too impressed with that either. I do agree if you are staying deluxe you should have your own bus. Out of every hotel I've stayed at I think the All Stars have the best bus service!! :confused3 :confused3 Go figure.

I see what you are asking, but you did compare the rooms at the south wing which would have nothing to do with staying at a new CRV, (I have no idea what the hotel rooms look like at BC/BWI or WL and dont care) you went on about the dining as if it is not that great when some DVC's having minimal choices (you asked whats the draw of CR and this is huge), transportation is the best you could get to MK and the buses to the rest could easily be improved so it is a draw IMO because it is not a bus to everything, it also has the monorail to all the dining at POLY and GF as well as a short boat ride to WL dining in minutes as well as pool hopping to all of these very easily (again no bus needed). Themeing I agree is not too great but with the above reasons as well as the new wings potential to look better than the rest of CR and maybe a quiet pool on top looking into MK for Wishes etc-not bad theming if you ask me. By the way you never said compared to POLY or AK.

The contemporary theme doesn't particularly appeal to me, but the location and the monorail do. Not sure if we'd buy some points there or not. I would have to see what the villas actually looked like before deciding I think. Now, Villas at Poly, or Villas at GF - we'd be all over that without a second thought!

One thing I thought of though with regard to pool hopping. A CRV would need to have a fantastic pool of it's own, or we're likely to see pool hopping suspended at Poly almost certainly, and possibly GF, due to overcrowding there, since they'd suddenly become so easily accessible to a whole new market of pool hoppers.

Ohhh, Monorail pool hopping! Now there's a thought. I wouldn't nomally think of pool hopping but your right, but this might make it so easy...

I don't care for the Contemporary, DH LOVES it. He stayed there as a child once. I love points, DH thinks we have enough. If they build a DVC at the Contemporary I get more points. This would be a win/win situation. :teeth:
