My son was accepted and has only a week or so to respond. His advisors told him that since the Disney Institute is no longer doing the courses for the college program, none of the courses will count toward credit for my son (marketing/business major and was offered Merchandising placement). It is really disappointing because he doesn't want to take a semester off of college. He was hoping to get at least 12 credits and he was looking forward to doing this, if worked out.

I'm just wondering what the rest of you are doing. Are you basically taking a semester off? Is your college giving you credit?

I'm not sure what his advisor is talking about. The Disney Collegiate Courses are certified for 3 credit hours each by the American Council on Education. I'm doing fall advantage and therefore able to take 4 classes total, thus getting 12 credit hours. I think the best idea would be to show the advisor the syllabi for the Collegiate Courses and show him/her that they are certified for credit.

I'm not sure what his advisors are talking about, either, and it is frustrating to me. What college do you attend and what is your major? Are you paying your school for the credits, like a regular tuition? I do see where you can try to take online classes from your school, but I don't know if he can do that either.

I attend a private school in Georgia as a Communication Arts major. It took a bit of convincing, but my school eventually agreed to let me have the credits. No, I'm not paying them anything, but I have heard of other participants having to pay their school in tuition. The last student from my college to do the program had to take online classes (his powers of persuasion must not be as well-honed as mine! :lmao: ), and he said that while it's possible to do online classes and work, it took a lot of time out of what little free time he had. My advice? Just keep poking and prodding the school administrators until they let him get credits!!

Thanks for responding. I will try to call the school myself and find out what can be done. Maybe my son and I will be as convincing as you!

I got co-op credit, because I go to Northeastern, and we're weird. So although it fit into NU's program, I didn't get any academic credit, so in a sense I am graduating a semester late.

As much as I wish I were graduating next month....I would do it all over again in a heartbeat, and I know I would have regretted not doing it.

I'm from University of Florida and I was able to get 4 credits of internship, combined with 8 credits for online courses. I know some places offer it but others don't. Disney happens to have a list of schools that will allow you to get credit without being enrolled. (Valencia Community College I believe is one of them [it's near Disney])
I'm sure the credit load isn't hard to keep up, I had to do it through my school only because I was keeping a full ride based on 12 credit hours. But if he's just looking to get 12 hours to work towards graduation, I'd look into the community colleges in Florida.
