Hello!
Well I have I have couple of questions I want to ask CP Alumni.
What was your role? Did you like it?
What apartment did you stay at?
Did you let Disney pre-pick your roommate?
How many roommate do you suggest someone have?
What did you do for fun up in Orlando?
What would you do differently?
Thank you!
1. Program #1 Fall 2007 Quick Service Food and Beverage at Hollywood Studios Backlot Express - not my favorite role (QSFB) but I LOVED IT! You're experience is what you make of it.
Program #2 Summer Alumni Program Summer 2009 Merch Downtown Disney Zone 1 - This experience was the icing on the cake. I never thought my second program would be better than my first but it far surpassed it. I'm still in contact with atleast 20 people on a weekly basis that I met in the 2 1/2 months I worked in Florida this summer. Amazing opportunity.
2. Chatham Square both times (first time 2 bedroom [4 people], 2nd time 1 bedroom [2 people]). Vista is old - fun for partying though. I'm a sorority girl, I like my fun but honestly Chatham is a bit quieter but If you wanna find the party you can find it in all 3 complexes, just the same as if you don't want to party. I suggest chatham for it's newer ammenities and range of apartment size. With Patterson you're going to be stuck with a lot of people no matter what.
3. Kinda, They have a roommate matching system. Here's my story (fall 07)...I opted into the roommate matching system (which means it will match you with a roommate but only the one that you're sharing a room with, you will not learn the identity of anyone else). The girl they somehow 'matched' me with ended up being completely different from me. She saw my facebook and apparently i 'scared' her because I wasn't godly enough and liked to go out and have fun (trust me, I'm harmless). So we decided to not room together and pulled out of the matching program. They ended up putting me with the girl in line ahead of me at check-in that wanted the same size room. Long story short my random match is now my Best Friend! Couldn't have worked out better. Honestly, if you don't know anyone else coming down I would leave it up to luck...I mean everyone coming to Disney is coming with the same basic goals and values (they got into the program didn't they?!)
4. 2 bedroom (3 roomates plus you), 3 bedroom = 6 roommates and thats way too many, don't do it! 1 bedroom = 1 other roommate isn't conducive to making a lot of friends, espeically if you don't know if you're going to click (luckily, when I did my one bedroom I went down with one of my best friends for the summer).
5. EVERYTHING IS FUN IN ORLANDO! I'm not sure how old you are but clubbing is great in downtown (hit up chillers on wednesday nights). If you're under 21 or over 21 House of Blues on Sunday nights IS A MUST! you meet so many people and if you're 21 you get in for free. International Drive is fun to cruise and experience the stupid stuff it has to offer. Beaches are a must do. Miami is fun. Shopping is great and endless amounts of resturants to eat at in Orlando. You'll never get bored if you don't let yourself. Check out Old Town on 192 or Celebration, Florida.
*in 2007 I was under 21 and on my summer alumni I was 21...Disney is strict but it was fun both times, but you have a little more wiggle room when you're 21.
6. On my first program it was a growing up experience for me. It was my first time living on my own other than in my college dorm and I decided to really live it up. I partied a little too much – in my opinion – and even though I made sure I had a very clean record card, I traded away most of my shifts and made just enough money to pay rent. Don’t get me wrong – when I was at the job I was a model cast member but I didn’t take full advantage of all of the opportunities in front of me. I did become a campus rep and the marketing experience I’ve gained on my resume because of it has been irreplaceable. This summer I got chosen to do the Summer Alumni program doing Merch in Downtown Disney (again because of my clean record card – this is important – you can work the system to your advantage – as in if you want days off trade them away, it’s easy but don’t ruin your record card by not showing up to work) and decided to get serious about Disney. I networked my butt off! I was a model cast member and took every opportunity to participate in learning new roles or shadowing. This has now led me to get a Professional Internship for this spring which ties into my major. I just graduated today actually and I got this PI because of the networking I did this summer. I now have contacts in Florida, at Disney records, at ABC good morning America Weekends, etc… that I talk to on a regular basis.
So basically I would have taken the opportunites I had more seriously the first time around. Take advantage of the free classes and tours. Networking isn't as easy as they make it sound but it pays off. Keep focused. Even if you don't want a Disney career for the rest of your life it can still open up so many doors if you try hard enough.
GOOD LUCK! and you'll have so much fun!
