Has anyone been to the Xcaret Eco Archeological Park in Cozumel? What can you tell us about the ruins? Is the transporation air conditioned? Is it worth the 1 1/2 hour travel time each way? Can we skip the swimming? Thanks :flower: :flower1:

Just wanted to let you know that Xcaret is on the mainland, so you are going to be transported by boat.

The poster who mentioned the ferry ride was quite right. First let me say that we arranged this on our own, so the experience could be totally different if you went through a cruise ship. We didn't realize how difficult it would be to actually get to Xcaret from Cozumel. By the time we got cabs to town to the pier, the last boat had left (this was around 11:00 am) and another wasn't scheduled until 1:00 or so. By the time we got on the ferry it was at least a 45 min ride. It was VERY choppy but air conditioned. Then it was another cab from there to the park. We'd left the ship at 10:00 and didn't arrive until almost 3:00. The park itself was nice and interesting. It was also very expensive. We did the dolphin encounter, water was freezing!!, and it was cool. Some of our group snorkeled, gear was extra $. If we'd been able to spend the full day I think we would have enjoyed our experience much more. We ate dinner there, there was some neat dancing, and then did the return ferry ride which was awful!! It was so windy and choppy, not to be gross here, they had buckets in the aisle and were passing out bags. Several in our group got seasick. It seemed like a very long day and we had young kids with us. Don't underestimate the travel time there and back. I was also irritated because I wanted to buy the dolphin encounter pics but the shop closed about 20 mins after we were done, they didn't tell us, and we weren't able to buy anything. I have no pics since we were all in the water!! We look back on that day now and just laugh. We are actually going to Cozumel in March with Carnival and we have all vowed "NO MORE FERRIES!!"

I hope I'm not sounding too negative! The place itself was very colorful and pretty.

Hope this helps!

Ouch! Thanks for your experience, does anyone have similar comments? How about with better comments?

On both of our trips to Cozumel, the water to the mainland WAS very choppy. But on our last trip there, we did something different altogether - we played mini-golf! Doesn't sound too exciting, but the course at Cozumel is indeed different - and within walking distance from the ship. We 'chose' the type of music we wanted to listen to around the course, they brought us drinks of our chosing (gave us 2 way radios to 'order'), saw huge iguanas hiding in the rocks. It was really neat and a good alternative to the beach tour we had planned. It was windy and way to cold to do that so we opted for the mini-golf. I would highly recommend this - we had a great time. There were 5 adults and 2 kids with the oldest being 7.

You can get to Chichen Itza from Cozumel. It's a 50 min. plane ride in a 5-seater Cessna. Just the right size for a family. The ruins are far more interesting and no ferry to deal with. The service is very personalized and they come get you right at the pier, five hours later you're back in Cozumel.

I vacation in that area of Mexico every year. In addition I have been to Cozumel several times. I would suggest doing something on Cozumel, because I don't see the point in traveling that far, when there is so much to do already at Cozumel. With that said, if you plan to skip the swimming at Xcaret, you really shouldn't go. The ruins pale in comparison to Tulum or Chichen Itza.
