Cozumel: Any good ruins on the island?

Hi all! Been awhile since I've trodden these boards but as our next cruise is fast approaching (<100 days now :cool1: ) I realize I need to start my planning.

As we're taking the western cruise this time we'll be stopping in Cozumel. I had really hoped to visit some aztec or mayan ruins and had decided upon Tulum but have read that seasickness can really be a problem when taking the ferry to the mainland (DW suffers from occaisional motion sickness).

So, anyone know of any good (e.g. impressive, historically meaningful etc) ruins on the island of Cozumel itself? Any other recommendations on good excursions that don't involve beaches or swimming (I think we'll have gotten our fill the day before in Grand Cayman).

Thanks for any and all assistance!

I was to Cozumel about 10 years ago and found the ruins there to be interesting but unspectacular. You might enjoy the beaches/snorkeling, walking around town and shopping or the museaum (sp) in town more fun. I found the town to be quaint/charming but I don't know what a decade has done, if it's too touristy and yucky now. here is info on the ruins if you choose to do it.

Interesting this subject should come up....I was watching on cable just the other day "Against All Odds" with Jeff Bridges and Rachel Ward (whatever happened to her?)....one of the pivotal scenes in the film was shot at the Tulum Ruins...looked like a place I would want to visit...Maybe only once though...

Granted it's not for every budget, but you can charter a private 5-seater Cessna out of Cozumel through some local operators to visit Chichen Itza with your own guide (includes a 75-foot pyramid with temple on top, which you can climb).

That's what my husband and I are doing with our sons, aged 9 and 7, on our upcoming February 2005 cruise. Chichen Itza has more to offer than the local ruins without the long and bumpy bus ride and doing it by plane means more time in Cozumel to explore and look around. It runs about $900 US for a family of 4 for about 5 hours (2 hours on plane, 3 at the ruins) but well worth it if you want a great educational experience for you and your family. We've gone the private charter route before to visit a volcano and absolutely no regrets. Money well spent...my youngest even sat in the co-pilot seat on the way back and, with the pilot's close supervision, pushed some buttons during the landing process.

Have your kids read Rescue in the Mayan Jungle by Karla Warkentin before and make this day trip even better.

Charter plane: $900
Gravol: $5
Seeing your kid "land" a plane: Absolutely priceless! :goodvibes
