Coyote advice please

I was at my compter at 6:00 this morning and heard something in my shrub bed. My first thought was my dogs, no, they were still in the house. Ok, must be some deer. I walked to the front door, turned on the light and walked out to the porch. I could here them start to run. Then I sam them run across the yard where the porch light illuminated. Two coyotes! I was freaked out. I never knew we had them and for them to be so close to the house is very disturbing! A friend told me the dogs will not react, barking and such because they are intimidated. aw:
What do I do now?

Hmmm, that is scary. They were probably scouting for cats hanging around the outside of your house.
You should probably call your local animal control and see what they think about the situation. Maybe they can give some advice. My parents have had coyotes in their neighborhood recently (several neighborhood cats and one chihuahua have been killed) and animal control just said the only thing to do is be sure your pets are all kept inside.

We've been having coyote issues in my area. Unfortunately there's been so much new development that their habitat and food source has gone away.
The things the local wildlife expert advise are:

-Keep all small dogs, cats and other pets inside or under close supervision. They may be easy prey for coyotes.
-Remove all possible food sources including garbage, compost, pet food, fruit, grill drippings and other artificial food sources that supplement the coyotes’ natural diet of rodents, rabbits, snakes, insects, berries and dead animals.
-Make backyards less inviting by cutting back brush, removing brush piles, and sealing off crawl spaces under homes and buildings. This limits both potential shelter and the rodent population that makes up 30 percent of a coyote’s diet.
-Fences can keep coyotes out if they are at least six feet tall and have “rollers” on the top to prevent the coyote from climbing and jumping.
-There are no commercial odors or sprays that deter coyotes. The human scent provides the best scent-related defense.

Well I just called the few neighbors I have to give them the heads up and my one neighbor said she was just commenting to her DH that they haven't seen any deer in a while.
Are these animals known to attack?

We have coyotes in our area occasionally. I've never heard of them attacking but they will go after cats and smaller dogs. They're getting crowded out by too much development and it's inevitable that they will do what they can to survive.

It's very rare that they attack humans. If they do they are more likely to go after small children.
They will go after cats, small dogs, and other family pets.

Coyote's are very common in our area and we have learned to put our cat in the garage at night and to supervise our dogs. About 5 years ago my dogs were attacked by a coyote that was in out yard. We have boston terriers that are around 15 lbs. each. Oreo was picked up by the coyote and Missy charged the coyote (go Missy! ). The coyote dropped Oreo and bit Missy's face. This all happened very quickly and by the time we got outside, the coyote jumped the fence and left the dogs. Both dogs required surgery and we had a bad couple of weeks. I am so thankful they survived and Oreo still has a scar on her thigh. Missy passed away about 2 years ago but she was our little hero! Keep those animals in.

I only have daughters. How do you think my Dh will react when I request him to do this?

Watch your MEDIUM & LARGE DOGS as well... You only saw 2 coyotes, but they are known to travel in packs and they have been known to attack larger dogs over by my father's house.

I actually miss hearing the coyotes yip at night. When we first moved here, we heard them all the time but now hardly at all.

Watch your MEDIUM & LARGE DOGS as well... You only saw 2 coyotes, but they are known to travel in packs and they have been known to attack larger dogs over by my father's house.

I've read that they can actually lure the dogs out away from the house and attack them.

The more territory marking the better. Hopefully you have some acidic loving shrubs like azaleas or hydrangeas in your yard
