Ok, so a couple of questions about the new entertainment system on VA.

1) Is there any where to get the iPhone connectivity cables apart from the plane?

I know you can buy them on board but they only have a limited number and it'd be nice to have it in advance.

2) I believe we can watch our own content on thumb drives but what format videos can it handle?

I don't want to load up my 6 seasons of The Big Bang Theory only to plug it in and see 'incompatible format'.

I actually thought the plane took a standard USB iPhone cable? It won't charge but it should connect.

Not sure about the thumb drive as I haven't heard of this before!

You use your usual iPhone cable.

You can view photos and things off your iPhone but not heard about watching things off a USB sorry.

A quick google implies it's only available through Virgin America or Virgin Australia and the planes they use are pretty different IIRC.

Yes, the Griffin store has them and they ship to the UK for $8 economy service, no idea how long it takes though.

I haven't seen one that has been updated to iPhone 5 connector though but you can use the adaptor plug that is widely available.

Not sure why there is a specific iPhone conector then, maybe it allows charging and control of the iPhone...

As to the USB, all I know is the flight attendant told me that it worked to watch your own videos using a thumb drive, so maybe it's the same as hearing something from a Disney bus driver. ;)

Nope, they definitely can take them on the plane doing the GTW - MCO run, I've even seen a cable it's just it was on the flight home and we were skint so didn't buy it.

That's the one! Unfortunately it looks like it's only available in the states and the international shipping probably wouldn't get here before we fly. :(

Ok, I'll just try and buy it on the plane but if for some reason they don't have any then I'll order one from Griffin to be delivered to our resort.

As to the thumb drive, I'll put a load of MP4s on it and see if it works. I would imagine if it can handle any format it'll be MP4s.

Once I land in MCO I'll throw up an update and let you know if it works. :)

DH used his standard USB cable and I don't remember seeing any for sale either :confused3

Edit: a quick google search and everything refers to be able to use your own devices and content through USB.

Virgin America has a different system. That appears to need the cable above.

You can't view video content on your iphone through a standard USB, you need the cable above.

Don't believe everything you read on google, believe me I own one of the cables and have tested it out on both the VA A330's and refurbished VA LGW/MAN 747 400's

Here is more detail with pictures of the socket you plug in to

This may be an obvious question, but can anyone tell me if there is any difference between using the AV sockets and the special (circular) ipod one, as long as you have the AV out connector for your ipod?

Thanks,

Christine

I am sure in October 2012 when I was on one of the refitted 747's my iphone USB cable fitted fine, I could listen to my music and charge the phone as well :)

That's what I heard. If you want to watch videos off of your IOS device and fully control it through the Virgin Entertainment system you need the cable.

but as a lot of people have found out, info on it is spotty at best. I know they exist, I know they work with the VA planes that do the GTW-MCO run but Google it and you get diddly squat, hence the confusion.

But thanks for confirming the cable info. I'll try and grab one onboard.
