This would be the first time I am visiting universal. I really only want to do one day, priority being Harry Potter. So here are some questions I am wondering about.
1- is the express pass worth it/necessary for a trip at the end of August?
2-if I buy a one day one park pass and then decide to go to Universal that night, can I upgrade?
3- if I don't buy the express pass and then decide once I am there that I want it, can I upgrade?
4- can I reenter the park midway through the day?

TIA!

1. It could be but you should wait until you arrive and see the lines for yourself before purchasing Express Plus Passes.

2. Yes...you can upgrade at Guest Services.

3. You can purchase EPs throughout either park. EPs are a separate ticket so there is no upgrading. You would just an EP by itself.

4. Yes

The only thing I would add is that if you decide that you do want to purchase a e/p they are sold in a few of the stores. I was over at US today and they were advertising it in the Minion store as soon as you walk into the park.

the EP's are sold in many stores.

OP, when you say the end of august, do you mean the last week or 30/31st?

if you check the park hour website, look and see the closing hours they had last year.

once the crowds leave, hours are cut back.

so when you say you want to return to the parks in the evening, check out the site first.

I am going the last week of August. These responses have been really helpful for me to wrap my head around! THanks. So I think what I will do is to buy a single park ticket and I can upgrade to a 2 park ticket if I have enough time and get the EP if and when I need it.

Is there a charge for City Walk or is it similar to DTD?

We often go in the last week of August. Crowds are not heavy but there will still be a wait. If you are only doing 1 park, you probably won't really need express. Since it is so hot, you'll be wanting to do the water rides.

You would have to pay the parking fee unless you're taking a cab or being dropped off but that's about it. CityWalk is open to the public so everyone is welcome. Depending on what hours you're going to be there, most of the clubs have cover charges and minimum ages to enter those clubs after a certain time. If you purchase Universal multi-day theme park tickets, most of the cover charges are taken care of.
