My dd 12 wants to get a cut, updo, and gel at the shop in two weeks. First, is this a good idea (she has long layered hair); and second, how long will it take?

We plan to be at the barbershop at 9 am when both it and the park open, however, we have a busy day and have to leave the park at 2:00 for another event, so I don't want to spend a hour of our morning in the shop.

The only other time we'll be at the MK this trip is for MNSSHP. Maybe she should get her cut before we leave, and then just go to the shop for the updo??

I would get the cut before you go on the trip that way it is from someone that you know locally and she'd be more likely to get it done the way she likeds and get used to styling it the way she'd want. Then I'd stop at the shop and get the updo and the gel.

Be forewarned that the sticky gel dries really hard and can be a little tough to get out. My DS has had it done twice and has super-short hair. We've had to wash the hair and use a washcloth to get the gel out that night before he slept.

When we went for ds3's (age 18 months at time) haircut in 2004, we waited for over an hour with him. Since it was his first haircut, we were happy to wait.

Unfortunately (or fortunately - we got great video), we waited so long, he fell asleep during his haircut...the barbershop quartet, when realizing he had fallen asleep, began singing lullabies....it brought tears to my eyes....

We will be waiting again in Nov for ds4's first haircut....

I wouldn't do the sticky gel mickey shapes though, after a while in the heat it get uncomfortable and itchy... I saw many mom's trying to wash it out of their kids hair in the bathroom sink....

Best wishes!

They don't really do "updos". More so ponytails and hidden mickeys; colored gel, confetti. Hair are sprayed "wet" then cut. No shampoo and style. We did it for my 3,7 and 11 yo. It was fine for the younger ones but not a big deal for my oldest, just IMHO.

The Bppitybopityboutique (sorry about the spelling) may be more of what she's looking for. They do updos, nails etc... You don't have to burn a park day .

How much do they charge for their services? Would be interested in a man's cut and the pony tail with design if anyone out there know's the price.
Thanks :dance3:

Ponytail up with a few streaks of gel would be fine...I had heard the gel washes out easily so I'll forewarn her that it dries stiff. Thanks for the input, we'll probably get the cut this weekend.

P.S. One more question....can you charge the style and tip to your room, or is it cash only?

I had no idea they sprayed the hair instead of washing. We are doing locks of love donations and now am not so certain I want them cutting our little bobs.

I was thinking washing our hair and sectioning it off and rubber banding it as we want it cut and then letting them snip them off. Spray us down and then give us a new short even bob. I guess I will be packing my own scissors to fix any stray hairs!

My wife and I stopped by the barber shop last month so she could get the "gel & sparkle" treatment. It cost a grand total of 5 bucks.

The looks she got through the day were priceless...a 60 yr old with purple hair...

That sounds terrific, sounds like you had a great time!

OP--I would probably opt for a nice cut at home and then just get the gel and mickey heads. Since she's older I don't think the gel/paste stuff will be that bad for her, just a heads up to you that it might take a bit to wash it out. DS got lots of attention, mostly from CMs and characters, the top of his head was red/white/blue (split evenly in 3rds) with multi-colored Mickey confetti and a red/white/blue mickey head on the back of his head. :)

Great!!! :rotfl:

The cost is $14 for cut and gel. We have done it 2 times and are leaving tomorrow for the 3rd.

For the poster who worried about having to fix stray hairs, they are licensed barbers and they do a better job then the person my DH and 2DSs go to here at home!!

Gotta pack!!

Well last night I offered to take her this weekend to the place she usually goes for the cut; she said no it's OK, I'll have it done at the MK.

Soooo.... I'll ask the stylist to just trim her layers and then put it up in a ponytail with gel streaks. I'm sure they'll do at least as good of a job as they do over at the mall hair place she likes.

I'm not sure if she'll get the glitter, she's competing in the Disney Martial Arts Festival that night over at Wide World of Sports...they might not take kindly to pixie dust flying off her head.
