My friend just came back and I do remember seeing something about this: you need to have your food before you get a table at counterservice?

My son is non-verbal and doesn't always understand what is said to him. I thought my husband could just grab a table for him and I could get the food.

If that's the case, I wasn't aware of it! I rented an ECV in the park and I had my cane with me. When we went to restaurants with counter service (we were at DLR) we would order, then I would go get a table while DD waited for our food. No one said a word and I didn't see any signs saying we needed to get our food first...

We just got back today.

At Walt Disney World, it depends on the restaurant, the time of day, and the crowds. Some places have CMs that watch the table area and prevent people from entering without the entire party/food, but we've only seen this twice - at Pinocchio Haus and Cosmic Ray's (I think it was Cosmic Ray's)

What you describes does happen some times, at some CS places. It is mostly during busy time and at busier restaurants. The idea is to keep the crowds flowing by not allowing people to hold tables until they are ready to eat at them. I have heard people say that few to no exceptions are made but I have not seen this in action myself. Hope you can find a way to make it work if you do encounter it.

Thanks everyone! Glad to know that this is only occassionally; if it happens a few times, I think we will be able to handle it!

have seen it happen at Cosmic Rays, if it does just have husband wait in back out of line. when you join go find table

Happened once at Pecos Bill. They actually took us to our table after a very short wait.

Same two places we experienced it. It was February which kind of threw me for a loop since that's a slower time.

We ran into this at Cosmic Ray's on the trip we just got back from. The outside eating area was open, but the indoor eating area was controlled access. The upside was when you had your food and went to sit, they asked you how many people in your party, then a CM would find you a table and lead you to it, so you didn't have to wander around looking. Actually gets you to a seat faster.

As others have said, if seating is access controlled, there should be places your husband can wait with your son, without having to get into line.

It might actually work better for him in general to be able to wait outside the restaurant so he can move around and have space around him while waiting for his food. Whoever is getting the food can text whoever is outside with your DS when the food is ready. This way you get to head straight to a table as soon as you walk in the restaurant instead of having to wander around looking for a table while trying to keep him calm while weaving between tables. It's kind of like how using a DAS lets him wait outside of the queue but in this case you're letting him wait outside the restaurant.
