Could you do this?

I'll use specific years to make this clear.

If you don't have enough 2004 points to make the reservation you want:

Could you borrow points from 2005 and combine them to make the reservation (to get a home resort advantage) and THEN after the 7 month window opens

rent points and THEN

substitute some of the rented points for your 2004 points used for the reservation and THEN

bank those 2004 points to 2005.

Borrowed points cannot be returned to the year they were borrowed from.

Yes, but if and only if there is still availability for the days and room type you have reserved at the time you substitute the points. Essentially, MS will be cancelling the "old reservation" and making a new reservation. If there is someone on the waitlist, the room/days would go to them. This answer assumes that the rented points are not from your home resort and that your banking deadlines for the 2004 points have not passed.

If you are thinking that this might be a way to get around the 11/7 month booking windows, it isn't.

Why not just rent points from someone who also owns at yor home resort? If you use them to make the reservation, there is no issue and no "substitution/reallocation" transaction to bother with. Just a thought.

I think so... once points are borrowed you cannot bank them. (unless you cancell the ressie, then the points can be put back to original year) Can't bank transferred points either.

If I understand you correctly.. say you need 150 pts and have 100 left this year. so you borrow 50 to make the ressie ..
then you transfer 25 into your account. you can't touch those 75 points again (those you borrowed and transferred), but you should be able to bank 75 of the original 100 ponts.. (total ressie cost minus the untouchable points)

You didn't say the use month, to bank at th 100% rate, you must do so within the first six months of the use year. At the 5th month, you lose 38 points if not banked....

Seems to me that it would be a lot easier just to rent the points at the 11 month window from someone who shares your home resort .. or just borrow ahead and leave it at that...

Nope... Carol is right. If you switch the points, whether or not you can "keep" the reservation will depend on whether or not there is a waiting list. What you would be attempting to do would be no different than if someone who owns at two different resorts booked at Resort "A" at 11 months and then trying to change the points at 7 months to their Resort "B" points. It's treated as an attempt to get around the 11/7 reservation priority system, and not allowed. If you know that you're going to borrow the points, just borrow them before you make the reservation.

One more thing. Yes you can bank transferred points. I have a friend who has banked my transferred points. He has the same use year as us so it was easy. I just don't know how it works we different use years.

Therefore, I think you can rent from someone else and bank those points until 2005. The only thing is you will have to use them in 2005 as they can not be banked again.

As a couple people have said, just rent from someone who has the same resort as yours and you will not have any trouble.

This looks like the thing to do. You'd just have to know 11 months in advance where you want to go and when, because if you don't use those points you may lose them.

Assuming your banking window works out, you could do what you ask in the OP. I'd agree that just renting may be the best. As a side note though, this is a good way to get extra mileage out of home resort points. Say you have two different home resorts, you could book using the 11 month priority window (Resort A) then at 7 months use the points for the other home resort (Resort B) to substitute then use the same home resort points (Resort A) again later or bank and use them next use year. As noted, it assumes the dates are still available but it is a good way to use points in some cases, especially if you have on and off property home resorts. NOTE you're not actually substituting points within a reservation, you're actually cancelling using one home resort and rebooking using the other home resort(s).
