I notice if anyone mentions smoking they are referred to a "smoking thread" that is 65 pages long. Obviously no one could read all of these posts without the assistance of servants.

May I suggest that new smoking threads be started and closed after they reach five pages in length. Of perhaps even that people be able to just start posts and talk about what they want to talk about without being shunted off to some corner.

I'm reminded of the movie Animal House, where the guys visit the ritzy fraternity house and keep being guided back to the corner where a guy in a turban and other misfits are located.

Please note that I am not expressing a view on smoking, so the smoking thread is not a proper place for this post. I'm just suggesting that the world would be a better place if people were allowed to politely and openly express their opinions.

For those who don't know, smoking threads here tended to become repetitive and nasty very quickly. In lieu of totally banning the subject on the DVC Boards, the mods at the time decided to allow discussion only in the one thread. There are several topics of a similar nature - there is a list of them in the Sticky Thread at the top of the Forum entitled Ongoing DVC Discussion Topics.

From time to time, the mods discuss changing the policy of allowing discussion in other threads. So far, there has been no desire on our part to change the policy - speaking only for myself, it isn't much fun to be a mod when posters are calling each other names or continually complaining about being flamed. Amazing how many think being flamed is when someone else posts a differing opinion.

Respectfully, I see no reason why the policy needs to change re the smoking thread. IMHO, there are no new opinions (or new information) on the topic anyway.

I've posted on various types of discussion boards, with varying levels of moderation. The DISboards are one of the heaviest moderated that I have yet to encounter. Not a value judgement, just a fact. I think when you post on any message board you just sort of have to come to terms with the level of moderation and work within that. I, too, prefer less moderated boards - but I love the DIS so I just go with it. Nothing really gained in bucking the system when it isn't really a democracy, you know? LOL.

Sorry Mods.

I posted some strong anti smoking statements on another thread. I was not aware of any ban on smoking statements except in that one thread.

I wil stick to that one thread in the future.
