Could someone explain use year timing with direct purchase?

I'm sure in 13 years I've read this, but I can't remember. If your use year is February, when is the best time to buy direct so you essentially end up with two years of points right away? Is it January?

To be clear, I'm refering to those "bonus" points the guides tell you your getting when they just mean the last year's point allotment.

assuming DVC has inventory of your (feb) UY, the best time to buy direct is dec or jan - yes.

the risk is that they will run out and put you on a waitlist, and by the time they get the pts to you...it's too late.

That's not what I have found. The Guides give the buyer UY points that are in the prior calendar year. The buyer doesn't understand the difference between calender year and UY so the Guides take advantage.

An example would be a purchase in May with a UY of October. The buyer thinks that they won't get points until Oct 2012 but the Guide gives them 2011 points which is actually their current UY.

When you purchase directly from Disney and the Unit you purchase is already open for occupancy, they start you off with a full set of current Use Year points provided they have them available. With a Feb UY, if you purchase any time between now and the end of Jan 2013, your first set of points will be your Feb 2012 UY points since that would be your current UY at the time of purchase.

Dues begin when you get your first set of points. If Disney has current UY points available, then your dues begin on your purchase date. If Disney does not have points available until your next UY begins, dues begin at the start of your next UY.

That is the reason some people wait until a month or so before the end of their current UY to purchase their add-on from Disney. They get the full set of current UY points (with only a month left in that UY) and pay only 30 days or so worth of dues on that set of points since dues begin on the purchase date. However, by waiting until the end of the UY to minimize the dues, you run the risk that Disney will run out of current UY points.

ETA: By waiting until near the end of the UY to purchase the add-on you will be past your banking deadline for that first set of points. Disney has been allowing members to bank those points however.

We did a direct add-on (although I would assume a new purchase would work the same way) on January 22, 2010. We have a Feb UY so we received the points for 2010 and we were allowed to immediately bank them...9 days before they expired. Since the dues are based on calendar year, we had to pay the dues on the 2011 points starting on January 22, so they were pro-rated for 22 days...BUT...we did not have to pay ANY dues on the 2010 points since we were already in the 2011 calendar year.

I'm a bit confused by your dates. I assume you purchased your add-on on Jan 22, 2011 since you mention 2010 points (you would have been in your Feb 2009 UY on 1/22/2010).

You did pay some dues on the 2010 points -- 9 days worth which is a great deal! If you had not received Feb 2010 points with your add-on, your dues would have been pro-rated from Feb 1, 2011 instead of from Jan 22, 2011. The dues you paid for Jan 22-31 were for the full set of Feb 2010 UY points. The dues you paid from Feb 1, 2011 - Dec 31, 2011 (plus Jan 1, 2012 - Jan 31, 2012 starting the following year) were for the Feb 2011 UY points.

Ok, that is probably correct. It was 9 days of MF's on a 50-pt contract so that's, what, about $3? I probably just didn't notice it on the $4000 purchase:rotfl2:.

Very true! But it illustrates exactly the point of this thread. The later in your UY that you purchase your add-on, the less you pay for that first set of points. If you had purchased that same add-on on Feb 1, 2010 instead of Jan 22, 2011 you would have received exactly the same number of points over the lifetime of the contract but your dues would have been pro-rated from Feb 1, 2010 instead of Jan 22, 2011. You would have paid 12 months of dues on those Feb 2010 points instead of 9 days worth.
