Could DVC..

Charge a set fee if you wanted to use your points outside of your home resort? I see that lots of people like to use points at other resorts, most particularly the smaller resorts. These points are coming from resorts with less maintenance fees, so the owners are in fact subsidizing the others stay. Could this use of non-home resort be charged?

I don't think there's anything that would permit a fee to use non-home resorts.

The only things I know of that are in the POS are:

1. They can change the booking window preference. It's currently 11/7 months. Not sure but I think they can make the non-home resort window as short as about 3-months or something like that, so it would be 11/3 instead of 11/7.

2. They can cease letting members use points at non-home resorts completely. Members would only be able to book their home resort.

I don't think so, Bobbi, because it isn't an outside trade. The fee is for trades outside of DVC.

Could they use the lottery system (that is in the contract) for bookings at seven months - i.e. let owners book seven to eleven months, at seven to five months or something collect non owner names (and owners who didn't already book) for a lottery for remaining rooms?

Even if Disney does have the right to say DVC owners have to stay at their home resort or even reduce the booking window to 11/3 months, I don't think they would. Imagine how much harder it would be to inspire people to buy into the program, imagine how many people would want out. DVC would end up being less appealing overall. Considering that most people stay at various resorts each visit, things naturally balance out with occupancy. When staying in WDW, I bounce around at several resorts to make each vacation a little different. The current system reduces the chance of burnout from too many visits and keeps us coming back to the parks over and over again.

you think they could do something?? the reason why i ask is i am looking into buying a resale... we were also seeing what price/promotion disney would give us he (disney) mentioined to me (we were honest with him that we were also looking into a resale as well) that disney is looking into charging a fee to people who
book any dvc's (disney) this would only be a charge for the resale people. i don't know if this was a way to scare us into buying through disney or not. I couldn't imagaine what crazyness this would cause if they did do this. So the other day i wanted to clarify this of what he said, and i asked would this affect people who bought a resale 10 yrs ago or would this be for people who buy 4 or 5 yrs from now, he said he wasn't sure he said disney dvc is working on this

so this kind of scares me into thinking maybe we should buy from disney??

Could they? Yes. Would they? Extremely unlikely.

Honestly, I don't want them to do anything of the sort. I like the idea of being able to stay anywhere in the system, even though I have only stayed at my home resorts (not including other offerings in the Disney Collection). Considering how far in advance some people seem to plan their trips, I think the windows work fine as they are. Why shouldn't somebody be able to use their points elsewhere if there's room? The four-month exclusive window, ending seven months before others can book, seems extremely fair to me.

On the other hand, owning at AKV which seems to be such a big draw, being able to go to other resorts if it's booked sounds fine.

Limiting us to our home resort would ruin DVC. They market this as "not your traditional timeshare."

I would NEVER have bought in if this had only been for 1 resort.

The OP stated that owners at high maintence fee resorts are "subsidizing" people coming from lower maintance fee resorts, which in a sense is true, but to DVC they get the maintance fees either way so there is no incentive for them to institute such a policy.

There's a post saying the maintenance fees are not enough to keep the villas up to Disney standards in the Epcot resorts. IF this is true, the extra use that the Epcot resorts get could be helped out by a "non-owners" fee.

That's a fair point (I just read that thread)...
That's actually a good idea, I would have no problem with DVC adding a $75 fee if people wanted to stay somewhere other than their home resort...I just don't think it's going to happen.

BTW, I also wouldn't have any problem if DVC eliminated studios either, since i never intend to use one of those.

I have never had bad, mediocre, less than stellar, DVC accomodations. I do use studios and the controversy over mugs, glasses in studios did add to my post count as well. That reminds me that in my BCV studio stay earlier this week, I had 4 drink glasses, 2 juice glasses and the 2 ceramic mugs. Those little things, truly, "made my day!"

I hope they would never impose a fee to use other DVC resorts. When we took the tour, my guide told us that DVC doesn't have any fees to use other resorts. At the time that was true, but now there is that $95 fee so I guess you never know.
