A Good Tip to pass on..............

Here's a good tip that I got from a friend who got the tip from a
neighborhood watch coordinator.

Keep your car keys next to your bed on the night stand and
when someone is trying to get into your house, or if you
hear a noise outside your house, just press the panic
alarm on your car remote. It will go off from most everywhere inside your
house and keep honking until your battery runs down or until you
reset it with the button on the key chain.

A lot of burglars will cut your telephone line before breaking in so
this is a real good idea. Could save your life.

That's a great tip! I charge my cell phone every night on the table next to my bed, so it is right there within reach.

Good in theory but no one pays attention to car alarms.

Oh, I don't know. A car alram went off in my neighborhood, and after about 5 minutes, it got many neighbor's attention. I was ready to call the police,to at least have them go and ask the owner to shut it off. DH was on his way to check it out, when the guy came running out in his boxer's and killed it. He was asleep, and the cat stepped in his keys. He didn't wake up right away.

Point is, many people don't pay attention to a car alarm within the first few minutes, but if the noise goes beyond a few minutes, it starts getting attention.

Plus I think the noise would spook the intruder, and make him run. Or he could be bold and force the keys from you, who knows. Hope we never have to find out.

i keep a baseball bat and prefer the bludgeoning method of control. but your idea has merit.

I keep that and 2 large dogs in the bed :rotfl2:

Thanks, but we have a gun there instead (well in a drawer). ;) Seriously, that is an interesting idea.

Ithink it's a great idea too. Always good to have back up ideas if you have others.

I just tried this out of curiosity and pushing the button when I was in my bedroom did absolutely nothing to the car that was out in the driveway. :confused3

I would rather have my cell phone and call the police myself. A security alarm works even better. This is what we have.

could be good in case of a fire or something as well...depends on the layout of your house...but we don't have a baseball bat in our room...we have guns too!

Six "D" cell Mag Light in the nightstand drawer for the same purpose. :thumbsup2

I've got a panic button on the alarm control right next to my bed. It's a LOT louder than a car alarm, and would get a lot more attention. It has nothing to do with the phone line, there is no line you can cut from the outside of the house to turn it off, not even power as it runs off backup batteries if the power is cut. There is one and only one way to turn it off without the code, and that's to get up into the attic and cut the wire, or drag a ladder into the family room, yank the alarm that's 14 feet up off the wall, and cut the wire. And yes, we do know this from learning it the hard way. :guilty: :guilty:

I have a friend who used to keep a loaded gun in his night stand, one night he was wakened by noise downstairs, he went for the gun and it wasn't there. he called the police, he then heard someone run out of his house, when he went downstairs he found the loaded gun on his coffee table..

Apparently the burglar had been in his bedroom right beside his bed, and he didn't wake up....how lucky he was that the gun wasn't used against him...

another thought, unless you are absolutely certain that you can pull the trigger on someone who has invaded your house, you are better off without the gun, veteran criminals can sense whether a person will actually shoot or not, and will often disarm the homeowner and use the weapon against them...

DH is a police officer. I am not worried. And I sleep lightly.

It might be more fun to use the Taser though. :teeth:

ETA: I also know how to use firearms and I know I could use it if need be. I was all ready trained before meeting DH, but even if I wasn't I sure would have learned because of safety issues.

This all reminds me of an article I read several years ago. A lady woke up one night after hearing someone in her garage. She took the fire extinguisher out of the kitchen and went into the garage and sprayed it at a very surprised robber who had no idea what she was spraying at him and took off thinking he had been maced. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

That is a wonderful idea!!! Even if no one were to pay attention to it, it might scare the intruder off. We also have an alarm system so I could possibly press that as well...with everything going off I bet it would get someone's attention. If nothing else you can break a window and run to your car to escape...which is more than you can do if you don't have your keys near you.

My DH is a police officer and works the 6PM - 6AM shift so I need all the ideas I can get to feel more safe when he isn't home.

Oh...and I don't own a gun or know how to use one...but if I did, I don't think I would have any problem shooting someone who I felt threatened by...and if they broke into my house in the middle of the night I would feel threatened. The only reason why I might not want to shoot them is because I like to keep my house clean. Blood all over the carpet isn't such a great look!!

We have a panic button in each bedroom next to the beds. (don't ask me about the time my 3 year old found it, I never knew there were that many cop cars in my city :teeth: )

If you don't have one the car alarm idea is great..so simple.
