Hello everyone,
Quick question...what are some ideas for Halloween costumes for one almost plus size girl (me) and my thinner sister? We are both in our twenties (late and mid)

We want to dress up for MHP but aren't sure if we should stick Disney themed or if we could go as whatever? What have been some costumes in the past?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Have a great weekend.

People go as anything and everything.

Pirates, princesses, robots, doctors, witches, every Disney character you can imagine, and so forth.

I went as a fortuneteller. :wizard:

Hope this helps,
Dreams

We're going as Capt Jack Harkness (my six year old daughter!!), the 9th Doctor, and Rose... so definitely not Disney! :lmao:

This year will actually be the first time I spend Halloween at DLR. I was thinking about doing something from Disney, don't want kids running up on me or being barred from entry.:confused3

Like the previous poster said people go as everything. As long as it's not too scary or gorey at all. If you look up the Halloween thread on here (I'd post the link but hard to do on my phone) you can see a lot of costume pics. Last year DD was Jack Skellington and DS was Barrel from The Nightmare Before Christmas. DH, my parents, and myself were pirates. This year the kids are going to be pirates and DH and I will be Anakin and a pregnant Padme since I will be 7 months pregnant this year. DD doesn't like the idea of dressing to go with her parents but doesn't mind matching her little brother. Lol

I'm not sure what you mean by "almost plus-size" (in my experience, a lot of women who put themselves in that category are not very big at all!). But regardless, size definitely shouldn't stop you from wearing whatever costume you like. What kind of ideas are you thinking of? That might help us make some more helpful suggestions.

If you plan to ride rides, I would keep move-ability in mind. It would not be easy to get into a ride at Disneyland wearing Belle or Tiana's ballgown, for instance! But Belle's village dress would be pretty easy to move in, and Belle's pink or maybe green dress from the movie would probably be OK. Many of the princesses offer multiple dresses with different ranges of comfort (and difficulty in constructing). Sleeping Beauty has her Briar Rose outfit; Snow White has her "peasant" dress; Ariel has her "Kiss the Girl" dress, her wedding dress, her pink dress, the blue dress at Disneyland, her mermaid form...

Last I heard they will NOT be letting costumed people in the parks before the party, so if you're visiting the parks earlier in the day, you also may need a costume that is easy to get on, will fit in a locker, and doesn't require extensive make-up. Since Disney may waffle on that position for some time, I would plan for a costume that fits those qualifications regardless.

And of course per the rules (at least last I saw), if you wear a mask, your eyes must be CLEARLY visible. Don't go in with a very nice mask that has two tiny eye-holes and then get mad that you get kicked out (as someone on another board did last year). Mostly I don't think I'd cover my face, period.

If you want obscure ideas, you could be from Pirates of the Caribbean--I think there are only a few women in there, but most are probably if anything larger than you. Your thinner friend might want to be the redhead, and she'd probably get a lot more attention than you, since she'd be more recognizable....depending on your preferences, that can be a good thing or a bad thing. (Some people might get a touch jealous--I would!--while others prefer not to get attention and would rather people be looking at their friend instead.)

I don't think we're going to, but I thought it would be fun for my friend and I to be Anne Bonny and Mary Reid from the walls on Pirates of the Caribbean. Recognizability might be low (again, I don't know if you consider that a good thing or a bad thing!) and that 1960s hair might be annoying to do :rotfl: plus I don't think you'd be able to bring in the weapons. The costumes, aside from the boots, would be pretty easy to put together, though, and move-ability is high. Heck, Anne even gets a purse!

I can't think of many prominent Disney women who aren't villains (did you want to be a villain?) and who are "large", and I think the ones that do exist would again be bigger than you. But someday when I'm older and/or bigger, I'm definitely going to be one of the fairies from Sleeping Beauty. :)

I was wondering about entry with costume. If the TOT Party is on a Tuesday and they are letting party guests enter at 3:00, does that mean you can wear your costume in a 3 or do you have to change into it once the party officially starts?

The website had reported you could wear it in at 3, but someone on another website called Disney and were told that no, you couldn't wear it until the party starts. :confused3

For myself (if I'm able to go), I'm going to plan for the 7 PM thing, as Disney might change policies anytime. (Even if the first party they DO allow adult costumes in before the party starts, that doesn't mean that they won't change their policy for the next party that takes place a few days later.)

I'm Pooh sized myself, and the current plan was Mama Odie if my Doctor Facilier tags along.

If not I'm going to be a chipmunk... not sure yet if a female one or Chip & Dale's long lost cousin. ;)

It's funny, but whenever I mention "Captain Jack," meaning Harkness, people always think I'm referring to Sparrow. I love this idea, although I think the fourth or fifth Doctor would be more recognizable. Of course I think most of the people would not recognize any of them.

yeah, we let the six year old pick all of them, and luckily she's okay with not being recognized (last year she was a sparkly pink Jedi). My DH looks almost exactly like the Ninth, so we'll just need clothes for him. Me as Rose will be a stretch, but we're doing the trio from The Doctor Dances episode, so maybe just a Union Jack shirt and a blond wig will be enough.

We'll amuse ourselves, if no one else :)

If your costume is realistic enough that you can be mistaken for a Disney Costumed Character, you are not allowed to pose for photos with other party guests or impersonate a CM, per the party rules. Otherwise, no worries.

Last year we were all Disney themed, DD10 was a pirate, DD13 was Constance (Bride from HM) and DBF and I were Hercules & Meg. EVERYone knew who everyone else was but me......LOL And I thought my costume was very cool for being homemade. :) Our costumes were all very easy too, in fact after the party ended at DCA we went to DLR and all DBF did was take off his outfit (he had shorts and a tee shirt underneath) and I just took my gold buttons off my dress. :) In fact I had CMs at DL say "hey were you dressed as Meg for the Halloween party?" LOL I thought that was pretty funny.
Anyway, if you're almost plus sized what about doing Cinderella for your thinner friend and the Fairy Godmother for you? That would so awesome...and your thinner friend could be Cinderella in a formal gown or in her rags. :)

I agree that the simpler the better. I am going as Minnie, DD9 is going as malificent, DD6 is going as Elizabeth Swan from Pirates OTC and DH is going as Indiana Jones. We got our costumes from www.buycostumes.com. They were very reasonably priced, not very extravagant and they also have a large selection of costumes for adults that are a big above average.

What about Pooh & Piglet? that would be cute and pretty easy, you just need pink for Piglet and a red shirt for Pooh....

You could also do the Queen of Hearts:

and Alice:

From the new movie, or they also have the more classic versions. Neither of those are available in plus size but they come in large instead of just standard sizes. If you do need plus size the classic versions are available in plus size, but the Queen one is significantly more expensive.

Wow...as usual these boards kick butt and you have all given super awesome ideas that I haven't even thought of! Thanks so much for your time and thoughts.

I really like the idea of doing something where we could each be one character from a movie! Thankfully we have enough time to get an idea together and maybe even start making it.

Again, these boards and everyone on them rules!!! Is it October yet??? pirate:

DH and I are thinking of going as Peter and Wendy, but i'm having a really hard time finding a costume. I have no skills, so making my own is out of the question too.

Have you tried thrift stores/Goodwill/etc.? You have lots of time so you should be able to find something suitable, with a few tiny revisions. A short-sleeved blue nightgown would be an excellent "base", and then you just need some blue ribbon for your hair, and blue ribbon to tie/pin around your nightgown right under the bustline. Ideally you might do some "gathering" to make the ribbon lie right on the gown, but it could technically work without it. I've never tried a sash that wasn't on my waist, so I don't know if it naturally wants to stay there or not.

Or just drive up a couple hundred miles and I will "alter" it for you. Juryrigging costumes is my specialty. :rotfl:

If you can only find a white nightgown then you could in theory dye it, too. (Most people, I find, have slightly more crafting skills than they think. :) )

So, we've decided on going as The Queen of Hearts and Alice. We are going to sew the costumes with the help of our Mom! So excited, just need the MHP tickets.
