Costume Guidelines - what is defined as a "cape?"

So, the official rules say, "Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist."

What is a cloak?

ie. Evil Queen, Mother Gothel, Maleficent?

So, no Kylo Rens, Jedis, Vaders?

I mean, I've seen all kinds of Harry Potter characters in cloaks over the years.

They changed the rules for adults the year they tried to ban costumes totally for adults before public outcry forced them to instead add more restrictions. Before that adults could wear full length capes.

That's NUTS!!! I can't imagine being banned from dressing up (though I could always disneybound)

I messaged and asked them if I could dress as jafar, sent them pictures and that had a long flowing cape to it and they said it would be fine, just no weapons. Like I’m attacking folk with a plastic snake staff 😂

Yep, hence the outcry and reversal. A huge part of the fun for the parties is dressing up. I really wish we could dress up for Batuu, though bounding will get you close. Of course, at Universal it’s the opposite- costumes are allowed at all times by all ages except during Halloween Horror Nights.

Look for alternative nomenclature in case they give you trouble. I always correct my DD that Elsa's ice-fortress gown does not include a "cape," but rather a Watteau (even though that is technically incorrect--no box pleats, for one thing!). 😉

Whoever you messaged most likely won't be at the gate when you enter. Don't count on getting in with a cape that does not fit the guidelines.

I think it’s safety on rides thing- full body cloak you’d generally be aware of it, close to body etc so if you boarded a ride you’d naturally have it contained. Cape not necessarily so much greater chance of it getting caught in a door, Car etc or having you or other guests trip over it-

I emailed guest services about the same with a costume/face paint question. They told me the exact same thing, they thought it would be alright but it was still at the discretion of the people at the gate.

If it’s detachable, you can always shove it in a locker of they tell you no. Or if it happens to be 90 degrees that night and you think you might suffer a heatstroke whilst wearing it. That full length velvet Mother Gothel dress nearly killed me but we do have one awesome family pic with Rapunzel and Flynn 🤣

Disney wants all capes or cloaks waist length. It is a safety issue, not for you but other guests, so that no one trips over your costume. Nothing can drag on ground or come in close contact with the ground.
