Anyone ever been to this port? Are there nice beaches? Any info appreciated.

Thanks,
Wendy

I checked out RCL and Carnival's offering for this port, if disney picks up some of these activites it looks like there will be lots on offer. Which double dip are you sailing on?

I am scheduled for that same cruise wendy but i dont know if i can wait that long.....sigh :guilty:

We are going May 06!!! There is a web site, I can't recall it right this min. If you love :lovestruc natural untouched beaches then this is the trip for you- plus two times at CC!! I think I recall also that the Costa Maya area is the 2nd largest GB Reef next to those around Australia, thats what I hope to be able to see while we are in Costa Maya.
But than again we love all of the places DCL goes and hope to visit the Eastern Magic one day also!

I was in Costa Maya this past October. I was terrribly disappointed in it. IMHO I wouldn't even bother to get off the ship. My family signed up for a snorkeling trip, paid for it, took a taxi to location and when they got there they were told the boat was full and they'd have to wait for the next one (2 hours later)..they did get their $ back, but wasted all that time. The pool is nice, but there are pools onboard. Minimal shopping...I picked up a magnet just so I had something from there, but that was all. Plus, you cannot donate blood for a year after being there (something about mosquitos I believe :confused3 )

Just my opinion...

 Like I said...everyone has their own take on any given place. Costa Maya is not my choice.

PDarrah: seems like we don't agree on anything :rotfl2:

We're going in 6-06 and I have searched a bit on this. I found on a site (I'm trying to locate it for you) some excursions that were specifically marked RECOMMENDED BY DCL.

I had been surprised because I was just looking at other cruise line excursions for CM when I stumbled on it.

Beach Break party-$25 adult and $15 child. Shopping, open bar, chairs and showers (not many chairs available according to a review)

Reef Snorkel-$25 10 min. boat ride, equipment water and sodas included

Horseback riding-$35

Chacchoben Ruins-$45, 1 hour bus ride (ugh!)

These don't sound as exciting as these excursions http://www.puertocostamaya.com/eng/junglebeach.cfm

I think the Uvero boat blast sounds fun-but it is a little pricey and is 30-45 min bus ride.

There is the Majahual Beach which is close. $3 per person per way by taxi. The lines are stated to get long at times.

Hi RonnieJo,

If we all agreed on everything, life would be awfully boring!!! :flower: :sunny: :) :earboy2:

It's the differences that make it fun :wave2:

Last October, my favorites were Costa Maya and the snorkeling at Cozumel (the town/shopping were sad because it has changed so much since I was last there over 12 years ago) I didn't care much for Key West and will probably just stay on board this year. We are doing the Western again this October. I am quite sure that there were many others who think I am totally backward and loved Key West and Cozumel!

We're not sailing to Costa Maya until Sept 16/06.
DH and I are also on the Sept 16 06 cruise and I am already getting excited! We have never taken a 7 day cruise so it will be nice, however I wish Disney would put out a little more info on Costa Maya.

ITA, we're going in August '06 and I'm starting to look into what to do in the ports. Since we've been to each port before we pretty much know what we want to do except for Costa Maya. You can check out Cruise Critic - Costa Maya as a starting point. HTH

Hated it.............the cm at the excursion desk told us we could cab it to the beach excursion that was sold out. We did......what a nightmare. They tried to charge us $400 (no food or drinks or toys) to use their beach for 2 hours and they said they would not let us ride the bus back unless we paid. The beach excursion was in a very remote area so there bus was the only way back. We had some DCL passengers listening to our plight and we talked our way in circles (with there help) to get back on the bus. I might add, all the others were fighting to get back on the bus as well and just leave!

In other words they were trying to scam us BIG time. Funny how a small group of people can influence your opinion of ALL those who live there. We should all remember this when we are representing the U.S.A.

We are going back, in 9/06 but we will probably enjoy the Magic and never get off the boat.

Try this link:
http://costamayacruiseexcursions.com/
(hope it works)(if not, try pasting into the browser)

Shows the recommended excursions for each of the cruise lines going into Costa Maya. I wasn't overly impressed, then I read this thread and was even less so. We're on the cruisetoberfest october 14, 2006 double dip. So there are 18 months for Costa Maya to get its act together and develop a better way of doing business. I won't go anywhere here that is NOT part of an excursion purchased through DCL.

I am positive these are the people who tried to rip us off

Mahahual Beach Break Party

Be warned........I did not talk to a single passenger that was pleased with the excursion. They all bought there excursion through DCL! The other couple that the CM told to take a cab there paid the guy $100 to get back to the port area.

Hopefully it will change before 2006, because we are going back as well.

I was on the same cruise as pdarrah and ronniejo66 and was not impressed with Costa Maya. I went to Tequilla Beach and went horseback riding, the town is small and doesn't have very many shops or very much to do. If I had the opportunity again, I would not get off the ship.
