Cost to sell

We are considering selling our DVC points. We bought through the Timeshare Store, and are considering selling through them. Does anybody know their commission schedule? I know they pack it on the price, but I am not sure what they do.

BTW, the reason we are selling is we feel it is getting out of hand. Too much building, not enough room. We are having increasingly hard times making reservations in the off-season. It is getting frustrating. Our son will be starting school next year (2003) so our days of September and December vacations are history, and our trips will be less frequent for sure. He is 4 years old and has already been there 6 times, plus we are going again in December. He needs a few years off. I'll take the profit (I can't believe I am saying that about a timeshare) and run, then pay the old fashioned way like the rest of the common folk! ;-)

On another note, I am not crazy about our expiration date. That is a whole other topic....

Any advice on selling would be appreciated.

How many points do you own and where? I can't imagine that I would EVER do this!! We have used our points for Hawaii and LOVE to do Disney every chance we get.

I am almost positive someone just posted they had contacted Timeshare and the commission was 12%.

Many are 12-15% with min of $1500. I think Lee Reid is $995 min or about 9.9%.

hi: just another thought- we've never had a problem taking the kids out of school for a vacation. our youngest is in high school now and has been going on vacation during the school year (and missing a week of school) through the years. it gets harder to do as they get older though with the sports schedules. thought the track coach was literally going to have a canary this past november.

If you are going to be taking your vacations more in the summer now then you might not have that much trouble making reservations. The summer actually seems to be a bit slower than hoildays or the first part of December. You can also trade out a few times to break things up a bit. We are thinking about doing that for next year.

Go to www.tug2.net and join for $10. You get a free ad. You can sell it yourself. There are also usually post in the want ads for DVC points. I sold mine without a broker this way, but a few years after, I was sorry and bought in again. Just be certain this is what you really want to do. I wish I had thought about it for a while. Where are your points? I know a few people who may be interested in buying in the future.

My point are at Old Key West. I have owned there for 6 years and still have never seen it. We have never set foot on the property.

I am feeling a tinge of sorrow as I investigate this. I know I'll probably never pay to stay at the great places we stayed while a DVC member. It will be back to the bus stops! No more Beach Club pool or Boardwalk rooms with a beautiful EPCOT view.... No more bringing friends and family along for basically nothing... No more Poly or Floridian.... But, on that note, the exchange rates at those hotels are so high now that it isn't worth it, and they will only go higher. As for the Beach Club or Boardwalk, I was shut out calling 7 months ahead. This is the 3rd time I have had a Boardwalk problem, all off-season.

I'd consider staying in if I could exchange my points at another resort. Personally, I'd rather stay at a moderate resort than own DVC and stay at OKW. Taking the bus everywhere just doesn't appeal to us. If I am going to do that, then I'll stay where there is cheap food and I'll save on the dues. It was a mistake to buy there, but the BW was the only other option and it was much pricier. Plus, we got free park passes until 2000. Anybody remember those?

I am still undecided. The rates are 12%, with a $1,000 minimum. Points are selling for about $65 at OKW if you have availability, so I'll do fine even with commission. Seeing how there is nothing for sale, they must be moving pretty fast.

It sounds like your problem isn't so much DVC, but the location you bought at? That's really unfortunate....

I did want to mention however, you have been booking for December these last three years? That time period is very difficult to book at 7 months out.. you can do the wait list at 7 months out & pretty much rely on the fact you will get it. Also, if you were calling for this coming December, you should have been able to easily get BCV's calling day by day at 7 months out, there was plenty of availability... WLV's were like that last year as well...

I think that three week time period is the toughest to book all year...

I probably wouldn't sell if I was at a different resort. We may still buy back in. But, like I said before, I am not sure it is the best deal in the world.

We are also not crazy about removing our son from school, and we hate going in the summer or during holidays.

Don't know about September, but December is definitely not "off-season" at the DVC. Lots of DVC'ers take advantage of the lower point costs to see all the holiday decorations.

If your child is entering school and you think you'd be travelling more during the summer months, it should be a lot easier to get a room in the summer than in December!!

Never Mind - Just read your comment about hating going during the summer.

Like I said, it was the only option at the time aside from the Boardwalk. Back then, you could call a couple weeks ahead and book the BW. Times have changed... it is growing out of hand, imo. Part of the sell is the ability to stay anywhere. Recently, that has become much harder to do. The point exchanges at non-DVC resorts are getting real high, and I am living proof as to how hard it has become to book a vacation outside of your home resort.

And everybody can say what they will, but early December is not harder to book than the summer months. After this year, that will be our only option.

Hi, I know a few weeks ago when I was thinking about selling, here's what I found.

Timeshare Store - 12 %
Shontell Crawford - 9 %
TUG - Almost free, but you go alone.
Also had 3 people e-mail direct that wanted the points.

In the end, we're staying and renting points for a year or so.

Yeah, summer is a bit rough... plus, we are Jersey folks and we spend a lot of time at the shore.

My biggest fear isn't today, but tomorrow. 5 years ago, there was never a problem. Today, 7 months is proving difficult. Tomorrow, I am guessing it will be close to impossible in July or Decemeber or whenever. I have been in DVC for awhile now, and things have changed.

Actually, Lee Reid charges $995 Max or 9.9% whichever is less. I just listed my OKW points with them and there is no commitment, you just pay them (at closing) if they get you a buyer and you accept. Aside from that, I do not not know much else about them, but if they find us a buyer I will post on how the whole process went.

Hi, You may also consider posting the amount of points on here and asking if anyone wants to swap. I have read posts on here in the past where people have bought, stayed at OKW and said they wished they had bought at OKW instead. You never know - u may get a good trade.

It's a shame you've never actually even seen OKW though. We bought at WLV but stayed OKW on our first trip and love it. Hope to add on points thru a resale eventually.

I guess I could try that. I'd swap OKW points in a heartbeat for BC or BW. Any takers???

I hear OKW is great. Everything in Disney is... I am just not a fan of the bus system as my sole source of transportation. It is usually fine, but being in the middle of MGM and EPCOT, plus having our favorite restaurants right there, is too awesome. Walking in and out of EPCOT is just so convenient. You also have a great pool selection between the BW, BC, and Swan/Dolphin. (nobody bothers you off-season if you hop)

Thanks... I just went to the site and posed the question. I would like to swap them first, but will sell them if that doesn't go down. he appears pretty solid and trustworthy. I may use him if it comes to it.
