Does anyone know what I would need to convert my Hi 8 mm tapes from my old fashioned video recorder (which is broken and unusable) to DVD's? And what a cost to do this might be?
TIA

Try Costco.com. We recently had a several old movie reels converted onto one dvd. I think it was about $45 for 4 copies with music added. Great job and we could even preview the tapes online before we picked them up. There were about 8 old reels from my DH childhood. They sometimes run a coupon special too.

Check around at your local camera/video stores as well. I had several done locally for about $15 each but it sometimes depends on the length and what additional services you have the shop do.

Isn't there an adapter to play the Hi-8 tapes in a regular VCR? If so, you could use a DVD recorder and do it yourself. I am going to buy a DVD recorder/VCR combo and transfer all my tapes this summer.

I just bought a machine that transfer VHS to DVD. Haven't used it yet but I have tons of home movies to transfer. The unit was $200 from Best Buy. I figure the cost to transfer would be close to the cost of purchasing the unit and I retain control of the originals. I don't remember a Hi8 adapter. I'm lucky that my recorder still works.

I have Hi8 tapes as well -- I don't think there's any kind of adapter -- that was for the mini-cassettes. I recently paid about $15 for 1 hr to a local place, with no extra services (they could do it quickly, other places were about a week).

One word of caution -- we have (had!) an older DVD player, and when I got the DVD of my tape back, the quality was terrible! It skipped, stopped, sound was bad -- turns out the tapes are made into progressive scan DVDs, and I didn't have a progressive scan player. So we had to get rid of the old one and get a new, and it worked fine.

I have TONS of tapes that I'd like to put on DVD. But we've started watching some of them, and it's funny, I'd say 90% are not worth watching!:rotfl:
