ITV1 shifts Sunday evening soaps

I do not watch these but soap fans of Eastenders will not be happy on Tuesdays.

The Sunday editions of Emmerdale and Coronation Street are to move as part of ITV1's revamped winter schedule.
Emmerdale's weekend edition will join the one on Tuesday to form an hour-long programme that will go out at the same time as BBC One's EastEnders.

Coronation Street will have two separate editions on Friday nights.

The rejigged schedule also sees ITV1's flagship News at Ten return from Monday to Thursday from 14 January, hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald.

Sir Trevor, who last presented ITV's evening news bulletin in 2005, said he was "delighted to be back" as lead anchor.

Julie Etchingham, who joins ITV1 from Sky News, will co-present, along with Mark Austin.

Friday's bulletin, known as The Late News, will be broadcast at 2300.

Simon Shaps, ITV's director of television, said the commercial channel had "responded to viewer feedback" with regards to Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Sir Trevor (r) said he was delighted to be back in the 2200 slot
He said the changes would allow fans to "catch up with their favourite soaps over fewer nights".

Dancing on Ice will move to Sunday night as part of a general weekend increase in comedy, drama and entertainment.

New programmes include Thank God You're Here, an improvisation show featuring comedian Paul Merton, and Saturday night quiz Duel.

The return of News at Ten will pit the programme against BBC One's main evening news bulletin for the first time since 2003.

If I was the BBC I would move EastEnders to either the vacant Sunday 7.30pm slot, or 8pm Tuesday. Maybe Holby to 7pm Tuesdays?

I cannt see what ITV are up to rather than Strictly come dancing on Sundays hammered ITV's Emmerdale and the start of Corrie.

As I don't watch soaps, then it won't bother me when they're on. But fancy putting Dancing on Ice on a Sunday night - that's a bit strange as it always seemed to do well with the ratings along with Primeval (which I am really looking forward to seeing :thumbsup2 )

I always watch the omnibus editions of the soaps on the weekend, I like a good 2 hour + run at one time:goodvibes

I think that ITV saw the BBC1 Success with Strictly on Sundays and decided to put DOI on Sundays.

ITV had a terrible Christmas apart from Corrie they were trashed by BBC1, and even at times BBC2 obtained more viewers than ITV, Mr Grade needs to do something fast to halt this.

No remember he 'canceled' Doctor Who when he controlled BBC1,saying it wasn't popular, so he knows what people like!

Thanx for the info Andrew:thumbsup2

Nice to see Trevor McDonald return to the helm of the news at 10:yay:

I hope we will have a end to putting films on in two halves....that is so annoying :headache:

Mandy i loved primeval as well :thumbsup2

Well they have Saturdays and Sundays now to show films in full.

In the Sun today ITV is quoted as saying its moving the soaps from the weekend 'to improve its schdule'. So thats what they think about their soap's.

Wouldnt be surprised to see the episodes cut down in due course, one less per week.
