Coronavirus and Anxiety

I am not overly worried about me (even though I'm in NYC and ride the subway) but I am very concerned for my mother. She's 93, has COPD and lives in Assisted Living in Florida. She just recovered from pneumonia about a month ago (which is impressive in itself).

Wow - we don't have anything like that in the grocery stores near me - but I also don't have Big Ys near us either. But Trader Joe's had it!

It's fairly new, but it's fantastic. Only a few Big Ys have liquor, but I think most have beer and wine. The one in my town has three full aisles of beer/liquor/wine.

This is how bad the toilet paper situation is getting.....

Luckily we have a good size yard ... being outside and seeing the tree buds, pulling weeds, watching birds at the feeder, preparing the soil for our garden, and seeing the vegetable seeds I planted starting to sprout are some of the best ways I've found to distract myself from the current situation. Being out in nature is good for my mind. If you are able to get outside, you might find spring can still be fun and uplifting.

I'm also busying myself getting ready to do some Easter crafts with the kids. We were supposed to be traveling over Easter so we weren't really going to do much, but now things have changed.

We've had gorgeous springlike temperatures here for the past month...but now of course starting tomorrow it's going to get cold and rainy and gross for at least a week. Not sure if that will make me feel better about not being able to go out and about anyway or worse because I won't even be able to hang out in my backyard and enjoy some sunshine. :sad1:

Please practice social distancing.

With all the schools and businesses closing doors, I hope people are taking this virus more seriously.
On Tuesday, March 10, the US had~800 confirmed cases. Today, March 13, we’re at ~2,000 cases. Obviously there are mild cases that are unaccounted for. But, regarding confirmed cases, we are at a pace of doubling in 2.5 days unabated, mimicking Italy. There is no way the number of hospital beds and ventilators in the US can keep up with the rate of newly diagnosed Covid-pneumonia patients.

Many counties are reporting anywhere from 10 to 40% hospitalization rate. And about half of those hospitalized require ICU.
Think about that, at least 1 in 10 chance to end up isolated in the hospital for at least 2 weeks.

Please everyone do your part and keep distance from others, especially if you have any flu or cold-like symptoms. If you do have any symptoms, stay inside for a week until all symptoms subside.

These are the type of things that are giving me the most anxiety. Employers should be making exceptions to their sick days policies for people who test positive for Coronavirus. I don't think many are.

At my job full time employees get 10 sick days a year. Part time employees get 5. Doctors notes will not excuse you. If you miss, you miss. We also use a rolling calendar. If you use a day in April, you don't get that day back until the next April. Any full-time employees (that has used even one sick day in the last 12 months) and any part time employees that needs to do a 2 week quarantine will be fired when they return.

The only exception my employer is making is for employees that travel to countries like China or Italy. Those employees are allowed to do a 2 week quarantine when they return to the states. But not any employees that might catch it locally.

I had the flu last summer, so if I catch the Coronavirus and am forced to quarantine I WILL BE FIRED. No ifs, ands or buts about it. If my doctor wants to quarantine me, there's going to need to be an armed guard at the door. I would willingly do a quarantine if it didn't cost me my job.

Quoting myself to give you guys an update. At work today they announced that they are suspending the sick days policy until the end of the month. If you need to call in sick, it won't count against you. They also said they would be accommodating to anyone that needs to be out for an extended period of time. That relieves most of my anxiety.

Glad I'm retired. I worked for a public utility with a tough attendance policy. I wasn't an abuser of the program and pretty much left alone. We had players of the system and knew how to milk the plan. By the way we were paid from the first day and paid in full. The attendance policy is because people abused the system. My heart goes out for people working today.

I can't practice social distancing at work. Literally 700 people on my floor and a lot of people right close next to me. Our city has closed all restaurants, movie theaters and gyms unless its take out so I'll be at home or in my office of germs.

I am feeling a lot of anxiety. DS21 has a weak immune system. He hasn’t left the house for a week but somehow he is sick.
DH and oldest DS still have to work so our house isn’t able to self-isolate.
His doctor advised keeping him home unless he gets a lot worse. I have already been through the wringer with this kid medically but I have to try to stay calm.

I hear you. My DS23 was a premie and has lifetime lung issues. He nearly died of the flu when he was younger. I think I have PTSD from that experience. DH and I are still going to work every day. It would be so much easier on my nerves if I could truly isolate for 6 months.

Try and take it day by day. Your son is sick today and still OK at home. Deal with tomorrow when it happens. Hopefully, he’ll wake up and be a little better.

Thank you so much for your words 🤗
