I want to have a go making my own corndogs and have found some recipes for the batter that make it look simple enough to do. Typically all these recipes are from the US and one of the ingredients is cornmeal.
Has anyone been able to buy this in the UK?
I had a look on Tescos site and put 'cornmeal' into the search box and it returned with Polenta. Is this the same thing - or would the batter turn out totally wrong??
Any suggestions gratefully received :goodvibes

Tesco do sell it.The one we use for cornbread is Natco medium cornmeal(polenta). It's very cheap for a 1.5 kg bag. You can find it in the ethnic aisle.

Polenta is the same thing, Kenny. We use it for cornbread and it turns out lovely (if I do say so myself ;))

Excellent. Thanks guys :thumbsup2

Looks like I will be giving Corndogs a go next time I am home :goodvibes

I flippin lost your cornbread recipe Joh, gutted! (hint hint ;) )

Goodness Joanne, you're so needy :rotfl:

Cornbread

1 3/4 cups all-purpose (plain) flour
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 tsps salt
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs, beaten
1 cup milk

1. Heat oven to 350 F
2. Combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add beaten eggs, along with milk and vegetable oil. Use a whisk to stir the mixture, mixing only enough to incorporate all the ingredients.
3. Pour batter into a baking pan coated with non-stick cooking spray (I used Fry Light)
4. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden. Cut into squares when cool.

Thanks for posting this Joh. I missed it the first time around so will definatley be giving it a go when I get back home (after my trip offshore which is quickly followed by the Dis meet)
Now all I need is a recipe for funnel cake, churros, west indian patties, ultimate pina coladas and a decent sauce for ribs and I will have all the elements for a good Florida party :)

Alrighty....since you voiced your interest and I'm a sharing sort of southern gal:goodvibes I'm going to give you my Mother's recipe for barbeque sauce.
It's great on chicken or ribs...It's a very old recipe--but wonderfully good and authentic.

1T bacon grease
1/4 c celery finely diced
1 medium onion finely diced
1 1/2 cups tomato catsup
1 1/2T light brown sugar
pinch of salt
1/8t chili powder
1/8t black pepper
1T apple cider vinegar
2-3 dashes of Worchestershire sauce
1/4 c water

Bring to a simmer and stir occasionally for 45 minutes. You may need to add a little water if the sauce becomes too thick.

Oh and you cornbread bakers----bake that in a cast iron skillet:thumbsup2

See what I did Joh, made you very popular :lmao:

Thanks Kathie :thumbsup2

The last decent BBQ sauce I had was brought over by a friend of mine from Houston and I haven't had anything close in this country since - so I am really keen to give this a go during our upcoming BBQ season :goodvibes

Just to clarify - is 'T' a tablespoon and 't' a teaspoon?
