I've got all sorts in my man drawer (probably even some Bassetts all sorts kicking around in there). I can never find what I'm looking for, but usually instead find something I was looking for six months ago, that I've since bought a replacement for. Does this happen to anyone else?

Yep. I also have a bag of keys from when we got the house. We went round the entire house trying to figure out what they were from, and still have no idea. Gladly the Man Drawer in my house is low on the take-away menus, since the Chinese, Indian and Pizza place are all within walking distance!
