Coraline 3D...Scam??

Just took my three kids to see Coraline in 3D at a theater in Ridgewood NJ..they charged an additional $3.00 a ticket just because it was in 3D!! Is this a usual practice? The only other movies I've seen in 3D have been at Disney. In addition, during the previews, they had their theater logo superimposed over the screen, which was both strange & annoying.

Makes me mad, too...The $3.00 is for the cost of the "3D" glasses they provide...and you HAVE to take them...You can't just bring your own pair. I took three grandchildren to a 3D movie...and had to pay $3.00 extra per person for those glasses...I thought I was smart because I saved the glasses to bring to another 3D movie...WRONG...I couldn't use them...In order to see the movie...you have to pay another $3.00 per person again...I can't afford to take my grandchildren to many of the new 3D movies now. What really gets me upset is when I see the "recycle" bin for the 3D glasses in the theaters, now!

Every 3d movie I've seen in a theater has been an extra $2. However, at the theater we see it at now, you don't get to keep the glasses. They are heavier duty and they clean them and reuse them. I do think part of the extra cost is that the technology is more expensive and they most likely had to upgrade equipment to show the 3d films.

Ditto what elgerber said. The extra charge is not only for the 3D glasses, but also because the theaters have to upgrade their technology to show 3D movies. A few theaters here show some movies in Imax and that's also several dollars more expensive than a regular movie.

Yeah, I've heard that they need to use special projection equipment to show these movies. Still, at $12 a ticket it's difficult to justify these days...

Heck, a regular screening of a regular movie in Manhattan is $12.50 for an adult ticket these days - I'd hate to see what they charge for a 3D movie!!!:scared1:

Ya, we pay $12 for a regular movie....3D movies? Last time we went they didn't charge us extra for that. I'm sure they do now so we will just wait to see this one.

Yipes. I love our cinema. $5 for a night show, $3.50 for a matinee. I took my nephew to see SpyKids 3D and we weren't charged any extra, though it was a few years ago. Our theater is upgrading seats, creating stadium theaters, etc., and they've kept their prices the same. I don't think we'll ever move, partly because we love to go to the movies! Our theater also lets you bring in your own food. The food prices are good, though, so we usually buy stuff there. Sorry to brag...but we live in the sticks and don't have much to brag about besides the 4H cattle queen and our local college. :)

I 1st came into contact with this 3D ripoff over the summer when my kids wanted to see Journey to the Center of the Earth. My dh took the kids to see it and then he was told it would be an additional cost for the 3D, what was he suppose to do, tell the kids sorry we are going home.

It is a total rip-off and I won't go to see 3D movies just because of the extra cost. I am sorry, but if the movie company wants to release a film in 3D the consumer shouldn't have to pay extra to see it that way.

I really don't mind paying the extra, I know the technology is more expensive, and I just love the way the 3d movies look! We saw Bolt in 3D and that it was fabulous, as was Coraline.

I agree that theater is the best we went to see Wall E when we were in WDW this past summer. The popcorn was terrible, everything was over pirced and the theater was totally packed even a week after opening. I looked at DH and said this makes me love our cinema even more!! I won't ever complain. Though I do wish that all the theater rooms had the new seats....

I had this "shock" also when I took my kids to see Coraline. I haven't been to a 3D movie in about 4 years, I had no idea there was a surcharge. Our "cheap" matinee ended up costing us almost $10/each! The instructions we were shown was to "please recycle" our glasses, and having just paid(what I thought-now I know it's for the upgraded projection equipment) for the glasses, I kept them. DS9 even tossed his in the recycle bin, I grabbed them and said, "HEY, I just paid $2.50 for those!"

I thought the movie was very strange...but I really liked it. The 3D effects were surprising to me-no poking things or throwing things at the audience..just a subtle depth to the movie.

I don't know what they charge for a 3D movie, but I paid $20 to see the last Harry Potter movie in IMAX. This is why I try to avoid going to the movies in Manhattan. I found a little independent theater in Brooklyn that has a top price of $9.50 so that's where I try to go.

Not to play devil's advocate, but no one is forcing you to see a movie in 3D. If you don't want to pay the surcharge, just go to a regular showing.

Coraline 3D was $15.50 at the Ziegfeld on 54th. It wasn't worth it, it my opinion!

The Hannah Montanna movie in 3-D was worth the extra $s but I took my DD to see Bolt in 3-D this summer and that was a complete rip-off. There was absolutely no reason for Disney to release Bolt in a 3-D version.

Our theaters didn't even show Bolt in 3-D. I felt that the normal movie had some 3-D qualities.

However, the 3-D versions of Coraline here add a $2.50 surcharge. I am waiting for it to be available for the $5 buck club before we go see it.

Yeah, our theater charges a $3 3-D surcharge. Those are some expensive plastic glasses! :3dglasses It was $18 for me and DD to see a matinee.

Coraline is in Dolby 3D. The glasses cost $50 each.

If you'd like, they can charge you $50 if you want to take them home.

There is a special dish-washer-like appliance that cleans them...we have one at work. (I don't work at the movies, I work FOR the movies).

And it isn't exactly the same if you used a pair of 3D glasses that you got in a boxed toy or something like that. :3dglasses

But trust me, we were apprehensive to pay $31 to see Coraline in 3D. THANK goodness it was worth it!
