Coral Reef question

I always giggle when I read bad reviews for Disney restaurants that we've been dining at for years. Fortunately, Coral Reef is usually one of them... More reservation time slots for us!

Our families love dining at the Coral Reef, and they have always provided us with excellent food and service. The fish and mosaic decor are beautiful, yet the atmosphere is family-friendly. We always save 2-2.5 hours of time to dine there; it has always been worth the wait and the expense. (I have read some complaints about the prices, but I wish more people would check sources like AllEars.net for pricing before they dined.)

We always make sure to leave room for dessert.

Their chefs have been VERY accommodating to requests for vegetarians and guests who have allergies/special requests too, moreso than at many other restaurants we've experienced. (Two of the other restaurants that we love which get poor reviews are Cinderella's Royal Table and dinner at Boma. Again, more for us to enjoy.)

I had the steak, DH had salmon I think, and DD had chicken - all lovely. Then I had creme brulee, DH had chocolate wave and DD had sorbet - again, all lovely. It was our first time there and went straight on our "must do" list for next time.

We enjoyed the restaurant and personally, I liked the steak better than I did at Le'Cellier. The only thing I did not like at Coral Reef was not the restaurant, but people who had to put their fat backsides on our table to take a picture.

I kid you not. Finally, I ended up telling a lady leaning on our table taking a picture while we were eating, "if I want my baked potato turned into mashed potatoes I'll find another way of doing it other than with your Ummm" fill in the blank. :rotfl2:

We enjoyed the Coral Reef quite a bit. My mom and brother raved about the mahi-mahi and my aunt liked her steak. I hated my veggie lasagna. I would never order that again. I don't eat fish, and didn't want another steak, so thought I'd try that. It was not good.

I particularly like the lobster bisque and the Chocolate Wave here. They've taken my favorite entrees off the menu, however.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the great suggestions, and also for getting me really psyched for our ressies! I guess I was assuming that we were going there more for atmosphere than for food, so I'm very happy to hear that others have had great meals here. (I will avoid the veggie lasagna though. :cool2:)

And also, Goofy4prez...

we were just there on friday and absolutely loved it. it helped that they sat us right up to the aquarium also. i had read the mixed reviews and decided to take a chance. our server was extremely informative and took his time with us. he explained everything on the menu and when we asked him to take a picture of us he took it both with and without flash because in his experience you get 2 different types of pictures. how thoughtful. dh ordered the mahi-mahi and i ordered the ny strip. we were both pleased with our meals. the best part of my meal was the almond gelato. OMG! that was one of the best desserts i have had at the world. an absolute must.

What does this taste like; is it chocolaty at all, or can you taste alcohol?

I don't remember the alcohol flavor being very strong. It gave it a little extra something, but it was sweet and smooth. (And yes, the chocolate is the strongest flavor present :) )

Edited to add: GovieMom, I found this link to a very brief review of the dessert (toward the bottom of the post): http://www.disunplugged.com/2009/04/02/the-coral-reef-review/
He or she also provides a picture of it. Hope this helps!

It's really hard for me to eat fish.... while, all their friends are looking at me.

I loved the Land and Sea appetizer--one of the best things I've eaten in WDW. Hated the mushroom lasagna. Dry and gross. Wasn't crazy about the steak either, but most people love it. Have fun!

I agree. Didn't know they took it off then menu though :(

The last time we were there, DS ordered the Mahi-Mahi and our server warned him it was very spicy. He didn't think it was spicy at all (but then, he's used to spicy food). Perhaps some people did find it too spicy.
I'm another one who loves the Mahi-Mahi. One time I had the veggie pumpkin dish because I love pumpkin, but there was virtually no pumpkin taste, very disappointing!
