Hi. To save money, I was trying to think of quick cheap meals that I could do when we are away. We are staying at the Sheriton Vistana, so we do have a full kitchen and I was going to bring odds & ends foods from home.

I'm assuming you're doing a trip to a grocery store or getting groceries delivered.
How about spaghetti? Just have to boil noodles and heat up a jar of sauce.
Or grilled ham&cheese sandwiches.
buy a bag of salad or some coleslaw to go with meals
cucumbers are a quick veggie to slice up
same with bell peppers
ham cooks quickly
rice (add some frozen / canned veggies as it cooks to cook the veggies with it)

Good luck!

Frozen Pizza and Salad is a favourite here. Publix has lots of preprepared meals and we usually pick up something there one night. We also eat lots of cold meat/ cheese/ veggie meals. Everyone is happy to eat lighter on the nights we eat at the condo because we eat so well when we eat out.

We're a family of 5, and avoiding restaurants is big, HUGE savings for us. There is a big wal mart not far from where you're staying; it and the publix are both good.

We tend to buy frozen stuff to re-heat in the oven. It's a compromise between saving $, not spending too much time cooking and eating healthy. If we were in a restaurant the kids would want chicken nuggets anyway. They don't complain because 1 parent takes the kids to the pool while the other has a relaxing break from the kids while the oven (and dishwasher) do most of the actual work.

Tacos, mini-pizzas, anything they can assemble themselves is usually a hit. Salad-in-a-bag kits are helpful and not much of a premium, still big savings compared to a restaurant. Frozen fruit-in-a-bag with ice cream or yogurt makes a nice desert that's 50% healthy and refreshing on hot pool days, little work (and the kids can assemble their own sundaes). Our unit had a blender and we made smoothies 2 or 3 times.

I bet the vistana has a BBQ you could use, but IMHO that eats up a lot of time... maybe if you wanted a big block of relaxing downtime.

Surprisingly, my kids didn't mind skipping treats in the parks, although we had a few. They recognized they could eat granola bars and drink from a water bottle while waiting in line, so they didn't waste time sitting at table or counter service when they could be riding!

We did go to Golden Corral one night. My wife is allergic to MSG, so the only thing she could eat was the roast turkey. We were told it was in the salad bar and didn't take chances, but they probably meant it was in the dressings. The kids loved to pick their own meal, it was another highlight of the trip for them. I can hardly stand GC myself, but put up with it since the kids enjoyed it so much.

This is absolitely the way to go as we have been renting homes or condos for the last 7 years.

I agree that if you have a bigger family and DW is preparing meals from scratch, she will fell like she can never get out of the kitchen! By the time you prepare, serve, clean-up and put away it takes up a lot of vacation time.

We go with things like lasagna, pasta, frozen fish, pizzas...the only real meal we cook is breakfast - love a big breakfast and then we just put out "pickin's" at lunch (cold meats, veggies, cheeses, nachos/salsa)...

Some stapes for the kids we love getting there as they aren't sold here....the smuckers PB and J crustless sandwiches (the same ones disney serves) are sold. I freeze these and bring them to the parks for DD's to eat for lunch and then I will buy them some fries or ice cream to go with it! Also the DD's love the Dolly Madison mini chocolate chip muffins that are individually bagged - great for an early morning at the park where I couldn't get them to eat befroe we left. They usually eat them while in line somewhere!

You'll save tons just on having your own beverages for the resort and the parks!

Yup. The pre-made frozen lasagna is awesome but it takes a good 1 1/2 to 2 hours to cook in oven. But we threw that in oven and swam for a break.

Tacos were easy. Just fry up the ground beef, season and done. You can do a double batch so you have a second meal to do chili another neat.

We have been doing this for the past 5 years

Breakfast is usually easy....its help yourself :) cereal, fruit, yogurt......

Other ideas for meals or snacks...quick & easy
