We (family of four) are planning on staying in an AOA suite. Last time we did Disney we stayed at Bonnet Creek and had a full kitchen.

Having just a very small freezer and a microwave is certainly limiting our plans for dining in the room for some lunches and some dinners.

I would love to hear any recipes/suggestions others have on how to make the most of cooking at AOA. Its been a long time since I've done any "dorm room style" cooking!

My goal is to just grocery shop once, so I am looking at more canned/shelf stable type things than usual. Things aren't really as healthy as we would normally do either ;)

This is what I've come up with so far:

Nachos (topped with canned refried beans, grated cheese and onions/tomatoes/olives)
Quesadilla: made with canned black beans and shredded cheese
Rotisserie Chicken
Baked Potatoes topped with broccoli and cheese
Kraft Mac and Cheese Bowls
Charcuterie plate: summer sausage, cubed cheese, crackers and fruit
Canned Soup
Eggs and pre-cooked frozen sausage
Oatmeal and Cereal
Deli Meat and sandwich fixings

Truthfully, the freezer isn't likely to keep anything frozen if it fits in it.... the fridge is the size of a dorm one I had in college. And the microwave is smallish. There are plastic forks, spoons and knives and paper plates. So, anything else you need, you have to bring.

I don't know if you'd fit all those ingredients in your fridge and they may take a good while to heat up.

We did breakfast in the room... raisin bread, cereal and milk, bananas, apples, yogurt etc. As far as lunch, I'd probably stick with PB&J and sandwiches.

Mac and cheese in the bowls would work... ramen noodles in that insulated cup would work. Nachos may work.

This is a tough one....sorry I'm not much help.

Looking at that menu, you might need to stock up on the toilet paper and water pills..:furious:

Tough to eat good with a tiny fridge and no stove...

We did cereal breakfasts as a quick way to get out of the room. Easy to buy milk at the resort being that gallons are too big to store.

Do a search on the dvc boards for meals in a studio threads. That might help for more ideas. Really you will be limited with fridge space etc. try and think of things you can make with items that do not need a fridge. What about a crock pot?

We ate breakfast in our room every day and did a few lunches and dinners. Those microwaves are mini microwaves. Ours sounded like it was going to explode at times. I think the potato which takes a long time to cook might be pushing it for those tiny microwaves not to mention the person who has to stand there cooking it. I don't think you could put in more than one or two at a time.

Breakfast foods are easy but for lunches we did lots of sandwiches, microwavable bowls of mac-n-cheese, BLT's using pre-cooked bacon, salads (pre-cooked grilled chicken pieces would work nice), PB on celery, Chicken n noodle soup, and whatever was leftover and re-heatable from our previous meal at the parks.

Good luck. You'll love the resort regardless.

Thanks. Looking at our schedule we have one hot lunch or dinner scheduled every day but one. Since the microwave and fridge are so poor, sounds like we'll be doing sandwiches and salads for the meal we don't have reservations for!

You shouldn't leave an unattended electric appliance in a hotel room - I believe it is against fire codes.

Both Hormel and Barilla make shelf-stable microwavable meals. They're not the healthiest (high in sodium, lots of preservatives). But it won't hurt to eat them during vacation. Offset the bad with a healthy salad or some steamed veggies.

Perdue short cuts are pre-cooked chicken strips that can be eaten cold on a salad. However, they will require refrigeration.

Maybe you can try some of those.

If you need to prepare most of your food in your room you may want to consider staying in the Cabins at Ft. Wilderness where you will have a full kitchen and full fridge.
