Has anyone cooked black beans in the crockpot? If so can you please share how.....

My MIL does. I called he rand she said she will soak the dry beans for several hours. Then she ads the beans, whatever seasoning she is in the mood for about 4-6 cups of water. Set it on low and cook overnight. She said to make sure that there is enough water to more than cover the beans.
I have used the following and my family likes it. I do not soak the beans.
  • 1 1-lb bag dried black beans
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 teaspoons dried epazote (optional)
  • 1 slice bacon and drippings, cooked but not crisp (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
  1. Mix the black beans, salt, and 6 cups of cold water in a pot and bring to a boil. Boil for 10 minutes.
  2. Put the chopped onion, bay leaf, epazote, bacon/drippings in the crock pot. Pour the beans and cooking water into crock pot, cover, and turn to low.
  3. Cook for 4-8 hours or until beans are cooked to your liking. Cool beans and liquid, portion into containers, and freeze.

I cook black beans plain in the slow cooker and then portion and freeze so I can pull them out for whatever recipe I need. I use the method I found online at budgetbyes. Rinse and sort a pound of black beans. Then put them in the slow cooker with 6 cups of water on high for 4-6 hours. Although I've cooked them on low for 8-10 hours as well. I drain and them before using or freezing.

Another recommendation for budgetbytes! She has so many delicious meals that are easy to make.

I cook all sorts of beans in the crock pot almost every day. I put the dried beans in for 3 hours with 2x the amount of water plus a bit of extra and cook on high for 3 hours. Then I add the rest of the recipe and cook on high 3-4 hours more. I never pre-soak. It is super easy.

This is my favorite black bean recipe right now:

I substitute 1-2tsp of vanilla for the sherry. Yummy!
