Confession is good for the soul is the saying. In reality, going to confession,
in the Catholic faith, absolves you of your sin. Your slate is wiped clean.

Praying the penance just means you're sorry. Also, I've read where it's good for a person psychologically because you're not holding onto things that eat at you,eg, lying,cheating,adultery,etc.






Mary did die. When we say she was assumed into Heaven body and soul, we mean that her body,incorrupt went to Heaven.

We do not worship Mary. We honor her and we love her as the mother of Christ.

I have to go along with honoring and not worshiping. Apparently, we have a pope to thank for celebrating her assumption. Might check the last two paragraphs especially...

Reading the various posts, it seems that in our search we all have somthing in common...we didn't question our faith in the Lord or in Jesus. We questioned how our religion was presenting our faith to us.

It is refreshing to know that the Roman Catholic church has made some changes. Pope John Paul seemed to strive to make the church seem more "user friendly". Hopefully, Pope Benedict will continue this work.

Currently, I am non-denominational. For years, I have found the relationship and the quest for a stronger, deeper relationship with the Lord more important than the religion side. Lately, I have been missing the traditional side, also. I find the information on the Oriental Orthodox absolutly fascinating. I'd love more info. on that, please.

Elizke - I feel the same way about our CCD classes for kids. The Catholic church needs to update and include families in the faith process. For us, we went through the motions, went on Sundays, but didn't get much out of it.

I went into this thread with a lot of questions, and have even more. I enjoy reading everyone's responses and for sharing a bit of your personal stories and beliefs!

Now, can someone explain what being an Evangelical Christian is? Elizke said something about the Evangelical part, not loving it yet. Just wondering what you meant! Thanks.

I absolutely loved the Catholic church we belonged to in FL. They had lots of family activities and get togethers. The kids had bibles in all classrooms and used them during religion classes. There was even a single-parents' group which was great for us! With DS in their school, it was encouraged to complete a short worksheet as a family after Sunday's mass at home. There were maybe three or four questions related to the readings, and the kids handed them in at school. It was great for putting the readings into terms the kids could understand.

Let's say I've been less than thrilled with the church we joined in VA. DS spent three years in the school there. I was happy that they also used bibles in class. However, it was like the school was still stuck in the 1950s. Not nearly the support at the church either compared to our parish in FL.

I'm not looking to change religions. But I am looking for a different Catholic church in our area that will hopefully be more in line with family activities...and be in the current decade!
