Converting DVD Camera Files in .VRO

I have a Hitachi DVD-Cam and am trying to edit together some home movies. I have tried to use the included software, but it always says another application is using the drive. (I've closed all explorer windows and turned off/uninstalled all DLA and Drag-to-Disc type applications.) I think my best shot is to copy the .VRO file and convert it somehow. Anyone have experience or advice on how to do this? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!
