Converting cash ressies to points

We are thinking about buying in to VWL but aren't quite sure. If we stay for cash, and while we are there decide to buy in, can we use the new points we just bought to pay for our stay? How does that work? Do they mail you a refund or apply the cost of your stay to your down payment? Would there be a cancellation fee to the resort?

Don't worry about all those questions, you can't do that at all.

Several years ago there was a promotion where you could apply the cost of your stay to purchasing DVC, but that was a long time ago.

The promotion that replaced this is called Magical Beginnings. You can sell back half of your first year points for $10 per point. For example, if you buy 150, you can sell back 75 for a $750 credit off your down payment. You can then use the other 75 for another trip or bank it to the next use year.

What is also nice about this is that they can backdate the use year 5 months. They are probably selling October use year this month, so you would be selling back half of October 2000 points. You would then get your full allottment in October 2001. When I bought, this worked out good for me since my first DVC trip wasn't until the next use year, so I had banked points plus the next year points to work with.
