I always - well before 9/11 - carried all toiletries in my carryon. The basics - shampoo, conditioner, gel, hairspary, deodorant. Is this a bad idea now?? Does this stuff have to go into your checked luggage? I was just thinking - how do you know that the hair spray is hair spray and not a corrosive chemical???

And if the toiletries have to go into checked luggage - any suggestions on protecting your clothes from leakage would be appreciated.

The best thing to protect from leaks are zip lock bags. They come in so many sizes and are perfect for the job.

My carry on was searched last time I flew because I brought my nail bag and inside were a tiny pair of manicure scissors. That is all they looked at. They didn't even glance at my toiletries. My daughter's bag went right thru with her toiletries inside.

I also pack all my toiletries in zip-lock bags. One thing to be careful about in your carry-on.....rolls of quarters!!! I had a roll in my carry-on last month and the lady working the scanner went nuts trying to find it!!! We literally tore the contents apart trying to find it. I had it in a change purse type thing and had completely forgotten it was there. Yep, that was me at Logan...armed and dangerous. But, it did make me feel better that she was so thorough!!! You should have seen the people looking at us.

Your carry on stuff is fine. Don't worry about it. Just don't do what I did which was bring on manicure scissors (where was my head). I went to the little post office at the airport and sent them home. They were expensive scissors.
Also, don't bring more than two lighters. I had three, they took the almost empty one.

Gail, that business about the lighter still cracks me up. I have visions of the guy actually trying to tell you with a straight face that having 3 lighters as opposed to 2 constitues a threat to the security of the airplane.

LOL! :)

It was a very nice woman. :) And, all she said was there was a limit of two. This was the first I had ever heard of this and it was the first time I had ever had a problem. I carry a bunch of lighters all the time ( I keep throwing them in my fanny pack), so, this was a bit of a surprise. Like I said, it was a non issue, one was almost empty anyway. But, I guess to her it was a security issue. Like I could not do damage with one if I was so inclined.
:)

Thanks for all your replys. I'll carry them on, and at least if my bags get lost - I'll have clean undies and clean hair!!!

Thanks for the heads up about the rolls of quarters! I'll be sure to put them on top!

Laurie :)
