We will be three people (DH and DS6 along with me) for three nights at the parks prior to a cruise in February. I want to be at the Contemporary for proximity to Magic Kingdom and Epcot, the only parks we will be doing. It seems to me that if we're going to be there, we might as well be in the main tower where the monorail is.

This is our first, and likely only trip for a long time. I know everyone has their own ideas of "is it worth it to ...", so I'm looking for more the pros and cons of being in the main tower versus being in the garden wing.

DS6 is very active, DH and I are older parents without as much energy and DH has some medical issues that make rest times a likely need, which is why I'm thinking being on monorail is important to us.

Thanks for your help!

I would choose the tower, but have never stayed in the garden wing. We also have an active six year old son and he enjoyed watching the magic kingdom and fireworks from the room. He also liked staying in the building the monorail goes through. It will be quicker to get to/from monorail/food etc. from the tower and over all I think it is the more exciting/fun place to be for kids. That said I'm sure either is a good choice.

Given what you've said I would highly recommend booking in the Tower. You'll be right in the middle of things (in a good way).

The garden wing would offer grassy areas for your son to play IF you got a ground floor room; and the Garden Wing is quiet (depending on your neighbors, of course). But for proximity to food and transportation and for the "magic" of being in the main building, I would book the Tower pixiedust:

Have fun!

We've done both and while I think the Garden Wing is an awesome value and a super easy walk, I also avg 6-10mi walking per day when exercising at home. We're in our 40s and our kids are currently 6 and 8...BUT...everyone is different. If being in the tower, even if it's more $, saves some energy for you guys...energy that you could use for your time in the parks...it might be your better course of action, even if it's more $. Plus, the tower is pretty magical :wizard:

I have stayed in both. The rooms themselves are virtually identical in size and layout. The only differences are that the tower rooms have balconies, which the wing rooms don't, and proximity to various parts of the resort (wing closer to pool and marina, tower closer to restaurants and transportation). I prefer the wing rooms due to the fact that being only three stories I can use stairs instead of the elevator if I choose (I always seem to have issues with the tower elevators) and I find the wing to be quieter for the most part than the tower. I have stayed in the farthest out wing room and was still able to get to the 4th floor for the monorail in under five minutes at a leisurely pace - in fact, it was as fast or most times faster than being in the tower and trying to reach the 4th floor by elevator. But it can feel like a long walk if you have mobility or health issues.

All that being said though, based on your family needs and the fact that it's more of a once in a lifetime kind of trip, I would recommend the tower - for the balcony and views especially. If you need to save a little money, the lake views are often a little less than the theme park views, and you still have the balcony to relax on and the convenience of nearby transportation and dining. Only you can decide whether saving the money is worth it for your family.

I have only stayed in the tower, but waking up to see Cinderella's castle is really nice. I'm normally not one to pay for a view (I'll pay for convenience though), but this is an exception for me.

ETA: I have a friend who gets really nervous with her kids and balconies. If that is a concern, I would consider aviiding the tower.

You are right - being in a monorail hotel is arguably the most convenient for easy access to both the MK and Epcot. (The other contender is the Poly because you catwalk to the TTC and take the monorail to Epcot without having to change monorails at the TTC) For access to the MK, the CR is the most convenient because you can easily walk to/from the MK. The walk is about 10 min along an easy pathway, but it does cross a road and parking lot.

The monorail goes right through the CR tower, so it is especially easy access from rooms in the tower - you just go downstairs! However, it does take either two elevators or an elevator and escalator to get to the monorail platform. If you are staying in the garden wing, you will have to walk along a very short covered walkway (after exiting the garden wing) to get to the CR tower, then proceed up to the monorail platform. It may be a little longer getting to the monorail from the garden wing, but it really isn't that much of a difference. It largely depends upon where your room is in the garden wing

Garden wing rooms are identical to the rooms in the tower. The main differences are the lack of balconies and view.
The garden wing is three stories high, I believe. The ground floor rooms have patios, but the second and third floor rooms do not have balconies. They have sliding glass doors that open to a railing only. If you want a ground floor room, the garden wing is your only option at the CR.
The MK views from the tower are of the MK area which includes: the main parking lot below, the monorail, Seven Seas lagoon, the boats going to the MK, the Poly, the GF and the MK! It is a real panoramic overview and it is great fun to watch wishes from your balcony in your PJ's at night.
The Bay lake views are exactly that: views of bay Lake. This view is very peaceful and serene. In some ways it is more beautiful than the MK view, but it is less exciting, IMO, so we (slightly) prefer to be able to watch the action from the MK side. The views from the Garden wing are either standard view or garden view. The number of standard view rooms is limited so they go quickly because they are the least expensive of all rooms on the monorail line. However, they are parking lot views only. The garden view rooms vary somewhat. They can be of Bay Lake, the pool area or of the manicured grounds of the CR. The views can be quite lovely from many of these rooms and they are convenient to the pool area.

The laundry room is in the garden wing, so if you will need to use that facility, then it is somewhat more convenient to the garden wing rooms.

We like the TPV rooms in the Tower the best. They do save steps and have wonderful views that are fun to watch. Staying in the tower also has the dining and shops of the CR just an elevator ride away. Chef Mickey's character meal is downstairs and the California Grille is upstairs. the Contempo Cafe has great quick service meals as well and the Wave is also pretty good. Many other shopping and dining options are just a monorail or boat ride away.

Bottom line: The tower is the ultimate at the CR with its amazing views and ease of access to everything that the CR offers. The garden wing rooms are a LITTLE less central and so are slightly less convenient. The difference in convenience is marginal, IMO. The big difference is in the atmosphere. There is something special about being in the tower with the mountain top views and the ability to watch the monorail glide through the building below. the three advantages of the garden wing are: ground floor rooms, laundry room close by, and the lower price.

Whichever you choose, staying in the CR is an ultimate Disney experience. We LOVED staying here!

Enjoy!

I agree with all the pp about how great the tower is. I also really liked going to sleep to Cinderella Castle and waking up to it, hearing the train and all the ambient noise from the park. It really was magical. If that's the way you are leaning, I would make a room request of the highest floor possible, it just makes the parking lot a little less distracting(not that it's overly distracting to begin with, but it does help being higher IMO). Have fun!

We have only stayed in the tower (though we had a Bay Lake View) and I do prefer that over the garden wing. The CR tower IS the theming at CR and I don't feel like the garden wing exudes any of that. It just seems to be a little hotel building. Just my opinion.

I haven't tried a garden view, but I had done the TPV and absolutely loved it. It is now my favorite room at Disney. I was concerned with all the complaints about the monorail noise, and it being a noisy resort. DH and I are mid-day break people, and we couldn't tell when the monorail was going through, or that the resort was so open. We weren't on the Chef Mickey side, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference in noise level. However, the convenience to MK is also a huge plus. DH and I loved walking to MK, and then taking the monorail back.

If this is your only trip for a long time definitely go for the Tower. Being able to watch the fireworks from your balcony is priceless. Make sure to get to Chef Mickey's. Our kids preferred the breakfast over dinner.

Garden wing is very nice if there were no issues, we had the gw with a patio and was great as our kids were close to pool and could sit outside or,play easily. I would say though probably the tower for you

We've stayed in the Garden Wing and the CR Tower several times.

Garden Wing is less expensive, quite a bit quieter, close to the pool but farther away from the shops and food.

Tower is more expensive, louder (especially near Chef Mickey's), close to shops and food. Elevators in the tower are notoriously and chronically slow.
