Contemporary Resort not accepting points

Contemporary Resort is no longer accepting dvc points. Whats up with that? Anyone have some insight?

Because of Bay Lake Towers, once DVC adds on, such as Beach Club and Wilderness Lodge that is no longer an option.

Members cannot use DVC points to reserve stays at resorts that are 'attached' to DVC resorts. So, that means no points use at:

BWI
BC
CR
AKL
WL

Points were usable at CR up until BLT villas were available for booking.

Not silly at all. When Walt Disney World builds a new Disney Vacation Club resort connected to an existing WDW resort, Disney Vacation Club points are no longer necessary at that WDW resort. The DVC resort is rightthere for points usage, and provides amenities one's points (and dues) include that a regular resort room doesn't.

The points required are very high plus there is a $95 reservation fee.

Moderates start at 18 points for weeknights in value season.
Yacht Club starts at 40, Polynesian 41, GF 45, FW Cabin 32

DVC has to negotiate a cost to split with these resorts, that is why it is so expensive. Also the reason they do not include resorts attached to a DVC.

IMO, all they took away was the insanely high point cost to stay at CR. Now I can stay at BLT for less than half the points per night that it used to cost to stay at CR. I still get the CR restaurants, shops, pools, marina, walkway to MK, and monorail, but for way less points.

For most resorts, I would understand that. But the Contemporary is so unique, I would think it should still be available, as is the Polynesian. My last call to MS, I was told you could not use points at all for CR, only money!

This is really a DVC policy question more than a resorts question, so I'm going to move it over to the DVC boards.

Have you considered renting the points you were planning to use at CR and using the proceeds to book a cash reservation there? Especially if you can find a discount code, I bet you'll have money left over.

For most resorts, I would understand that. But the Contemporary is so unique, I would think it should still be available, as is the Polynesian. My last call to MS, I was told you could not use points at all for CR, only money!

Its uniqueness is now shared with DVC's Bay Lake Tower; guests at BLT has full access to all amenities that Contemporary Resort offers and also BLT offers its own very unique advantages - if you're booked at BLT on DVC points or on a cash reservation made through Member Services you can go to Top of The World Lounge; guests staying at CR cannot, and BLT's pool is only for use of guests staying at BLT too.

If DVC ever builds at Polynesian Resort it will be same situation, those rooms will no longer be available to book on points.

Partly because most people would not longer use the options and thus it's not needed. The other benefit is that every point traded for cash type exchanges competes with the other points used in a similar fashion. So if they can cut down on a few points used for such options and still not really limit choices, it's a win for all.

Sorry, but I disagree. I think it is silly. They are looked at as differently in the eyes of Disney. IMHO, I believe I should be able to trade my points to any Disney hotel if I'm willing to pay the transfer fee.

They didn't take away a resort, they expanded it to include DVC. Simlar to staying in the garden wings of CSR, now the wing is just a big tower. Same thing at the other resorts that have DVC, they have new buildings to house the DVC units.

As Dean mentioned, DVC doesn't want members staying in the cash rooms, leaving the more expensive (for cash guests) DVC rooms sitting empty, so they push you into the DVC rooms to keep the system balanced.

Actually, all Disney resorts are unique

If DVC builds a wing at the Polynesian, you will no longer be able to book cash rooms with DVC points...they will seperate the inventory like at other resorts and you will only be able to book DVC rooms with DVC points.

Really, I think a lot of it has to do with popularity of resorts. Lets say during F&W at Epcot, when BCV and BWV booked up on points, members would just start booking the cash rooms using points, in essense blocking out the cash guests. The goal is to fill all DVC resorts as much as possible, so they want you to find another DVC resort in order to use your points. They leave the other resorts as an option, mostly as a selling point IMHO and make the points charts so high it is not worth it.

They could have retain access but they chose not to. It is totally their call and is a reasonable choice but not the only choice. There is an inherent cost to running each part of the program even if they are zero sum on the surface and it's unlikely retaining access to resorts that have a DVC component is likely not a cost effective option.

And I think you should sell me your car for a dozen Twizzlers (the red ones, of course), but it doesn't mean you have to. Disney has the right to determine what form of currency they take for payment. They stop taking DVC points when a DVC resort has been added to a property.

The problem is DVC then has to send a room to CRO to rent for cash to pay for your stay. They are having difficulties renting those cash rooms for a reasonable rate. They ended up having to give away some SSR rooms for free upgrades from the values and moderates in August. Or having to offer 40% off to get people to book them. They can only afford to have a limited number of cash rooms out there so they limit the options to resorts that don't have a DVC.

I can understand most of what is being said, but I still think you should be able to use points to stay anywhere. Some of us like to try out every resort, which is my plan. I was lucky enough to stay at CR already, but asked out of curiosity when I called MS. The only thing is, they keep adding, my list gets longer!
